Its community conflict has promise, though the available story setup points to several connected disputes rather than one rivalry that defines every episode.
Is Marshals like Yellowstone?
Yes in its people and setting; less so in how its stories are built. Luke Grimes reprises Kayce Dutton, whose ties to Tate, Mo, and Thomas Rainwater keep the new series connected to the Dutton and Broken Rock worlds. But Kayce leaves the Yellowstone Ranch to join an elite Montana U.S. Marshals unit, shifting the focus from ranch and family melodrama to law enforcement and cases.
The Associated Press describes showrunner Spencer Hudnut’s move as taking Kayce from a neo-Western family drama into a Western law-enforcement procedural. Grimes told the AP the team wanted enough of Yellowstone’s ethos for original fans to recognize, while giving the new series somewhere distinct to go. That is an account of creative intent, not a guarantee that the show fully establishes its own identity.
What is the new rivalry in Marshals?
The conflict grows out of friction among Broken Rock, local ranchers, and violent actors in the area. CBS’s episode descriptions begin with a dispute over a mine groundbreaking that becomes a standoff, then move through trafficking and a paramilitary compound before an attempt on Rainwater points toward a larger conspiracy. The Daily Beast’s review of the premiere treats tensions between white and Indigenous Montana residents as connective tissue for the cases.

That material gives the show a continuing community conflict to draw on, but it does not establish one all-encompassing rivalry that drives every episode. “Colossal” is best understood as the review’s emphasis on the stakes the series is setting up, rather than a settled description of the scale or outcome of the conflict.
Does the procedural format leave room for character?
Hudnut told the AP that CBS wanted a “non-traditional procedural” that would let the series lean heavily into character. In practice, the format sets up a balance: the unit’s cases can provide weekly momentum, while Kayce’s family relationships and the history of Broken Rock carry forward across episodes.

The response has not been uniformly positive. The Daily Beast judged the premiere generic and overly familiar. That criticism sits in tension with the showrunner’s stated aim: a character-led procedural may distinguish itself through its people and community stakes, but familiar law-enforcement plots can also make the new format feel conventional. The episode descriptions establish the ingredients; whether they combine into a distinctive rivalry is a matter of execution.
Is Marshals a Yellowstone spinoff?
Yes. Kayce is the direct continuity link, and familiar relationships remain part of the story. The Marshals unit, its colleagues, and its law-enforcement cases provide the new series with a different central setup. It is therefore both a continuation of the Yellowstone world and a procedural built around a new team.

Where can you watch Marshals?
CBS lists the series on its network page, and Paramount Press Express identifies Paramount+ as a streaming option. The official pages’ current season-two listing gives a premiere of Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 8:30 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT on CBS. Paramount Press Express lists the broadcast slot as 8:30–9:30 p.m. ET/PT; it says Paramount+ Premium subscribers can watch live and on demand, while Essential subscribers can watch on demand the day after broadcast.
