Mandisa Lynn Hundley, known professionally as Mandisa, moved from a ninth-place finish on American Idol in 2006 to a Grammy-winning career in contemporary Christian music. She spoke publicly about depression, weight-related challenges, the pandemic and faith, then died at 47 in 2024. Her representative initially said the cause was unknown; a later account of the autopsy reported complications of class III obesity and listed the manner of death as natural.
Who was Mandisa from American Idol?
Mandisa became widely known as a contestant on season five of American Idol in 2006, finishing ninth, according to the Associated Press. The television appearance introduced her to a broad audience, but it was the beginning rather than the full measure of her career. She went on to establish herself as a contemporary Christian singer and songwriter.

Her music career after the show
True Beauty (2007)
Mandisa released her debut album, True Beauty, in 2007. The Associated Press reported that the album received a Grammy nomination that year. Its release marked her transition from reality-show contestant to recording artist in Christian music.
Overcomer and the Grammy
Her 2013 album Overcomer won the 2014 Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. The award recognized the album, not the title track alone, a distinction that is sometimes blurred in brief accounts of her career. The win confirmed Mandisa as a major contemporary Christian recording artist.

What did Mandisa write about in her memoir?
In Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy, published in 2022, Mandisa wrote about severe depression, weight-related challenges, the isolation and disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the role of Christian faith in how she understood those experiences. The memoir presented those subjects as part of her personal and spiritual journey, not as a simple success story.
Her openness gave listeners context for the vulnerability behind her public image. It is important, however, not to treat the memoir’s discussion of depression or other hardship as an explanation for her death; the later medical finding came from an autopsy report and was reported separately.
How did Mandisa die?
What was known when her death was announced
Mandisa was found dead at her Nashville home on April 18, 2024, at age 47. In the initial announcement, her representative said that the cause of death was unknown, as reported by the Associated Press. That was the information available at the time of the announcement.
What the later autopsy report said
On June 4, 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that the autopsy attributed Mandisa’s death to complications of class III obesity and recorded the manner as natural. This later report should not be folded into the representative’s earlier statement: the cause was initially unknown and was supplied later through the reported autopsy finding.

The medical detail is one part of the record, not the definition of Mandisa’s life. Her work, faith and willingness to discuss difficult experiences remained central to how audiences knew her.
How colleagues remembered her
David Pierce, K-Love’s chief media officer, offered a tribute quoted by the Los Angeles Times: “Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart.” The statement is a tribute from Pierce and K-Love, rather than a neutral biographical description, but it captures the affection surrounding her death.
