What Madonna wore to the 2025 Met Gala
Vogue described Madonna’s outfit as a cream, double-breasted Tom Ford tuxedo, with pleated trousers, a crisp white piqué shirt with a plastron front, a wing-tip collar and a gardenia at the lapel. The Associated Press (AP) identified the look as Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann. Those are the outlets’ respective attributions; the reporting does not resolve the difference further.
“Power suit” is a convenient shorthand for the striking tailored look, but Vogue’s specific term is tuxedo. Was Madonna smoking a cigar?
Not according to what the cited reporting establishes. Vogue and AP show or describe a cigar as part of Madonna’s appearance, but neither confirms that it was lit or that she smoked it. The precise description is that she carried a cigar.

How the look fit the Met Gala theme
The May 5 gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrated the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Vogue identified the dress code as “Tailored For You,” inviting personal interpretations of menswear and tailoring. Madonna’s cream tuxedo put a tailored silhouette at the center of her look, while the gardenia and cigar provided distinctive accessories. Vogue’s event coverage; AP’s report on the gala.
AP quoted Holly Alford, an assistant dean and associate professor in Virginia Commonwealth University’s fashion and merchandising program, praising historically informed looks more broadly: “Those that researched the moment and pulled inspiration from history made it modern and their own. I loved it.” Alford’s comment addressed the evening’s looks generally, not Madonna’s outfit specifically.
