Kevin Sorbo questioned Kamala Harris’s Black identity in an August 9, 2024, post on X, demanding that she say a racial slur. Lucy Lawless responded the next day with an ironic defense of Sorbo, recalling a private conversation about O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown Simpson that she said took place in 1995. The exchange on X is documented in contemporaneous reporting; the older conversation is Lawless’s recollection, not independently confirmed dialogue.
What did Kevin Sorbo say about Kamala Harris?
On August 9, 2024, actor Kevin Sorbo posted on X: “If Kamala really is black, have her say the N-word, let the people decide for themselves.” The New Zealand Herald described the post as questioning then–Vice President Harris’s identity. The demand and its premise were Sorbo’s, not a test Harris was required to meet.

The New Zealand Herald’s report quoted the post and reported that it was published on August 9.
How did Lucy Lawless respond?
On August 10, Lawless replied on X with an ironic opening: “In his defense, I personally witnessed a time when Kevin Sorbo stuck up for a black man against white people.” She then recounted a conversation she said occurred in February 1995, when the actors were discussing Simpson and Brown Simpson.
#1 Best Overall
As Lawless recalled it, Sorbo described Brown Simpson as “no picnic,” and later called her “a piece of work.” Lawless said the group was “gobsmacked” and wrote: “I said, ‘She didn’t deserve to be stabbed to death.’ He replied, ‘I’m just saying, She was a piece of work.’ It stuck in my mind because those Americanisms were unusual to us. But we knew what he meant.”
The Daily Beast’s August 10 account reported Lawless’s post and her version of the exchange. The 1995 conversation is a retrospective account attributed to Lawless; it is not contemporaneous documentation, and the cited reports do not establish that Sorbo confirmed it.

What happened, and when?
- February 1995, according to Lawless: She says the conversation about Simpson and Brown Simpson took place around the time her character Xena was introduced on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. This date and dialogue come from her later recollection.
- January 6, 2021: Sorbo posted a photo of the Capitol mob and questioned whether its members were Trump supporters or leftist agitators. Lawless criticized him, saying they were not patriots. The Los Angeles Times reported that separate disagreement on January 8, 2021.
- August 9, 2024: Sorbo posted his remark about Harris on X.
- August 10, 2024: Lawless responded with the Simpson anecdote. The Daily Beast published its account that day; the New Zealand Herald published its report on August 11.
How should the two disputes be understood?
The 2021 exchange was an earlier public disagreement about the Capitol attack. It was not the event that prompted Lawless’s August 2024 response. That response followed Sorbo’s post about Harris; Lawless chose to frame it with a story from her own account of an earlier, private conversation. The two dated posts and the 1995 anecdote therefore have different evidentiary status: the posts were reported as public statements, while the conversation is Lawless’s recollection.
