Louisiana man Robert Brantley tried to rescue one stray kitten near Pioneer in June 2022, but 12 more kittens emerged from the grass, leaving him with 13 kittens to save. Brantley took them home, filmed their care, and became the subject of a widely shared viral video whose complete adoption outcome remains unverified.
What began as a quick roadside stop became an unexpectedly large rescue. The contemporaneous reporting supports the basic sequence, while later retellings require care around claims that the kittens were dumped and what ultimately happened to every animal.

How did the Louisiana man rescue 13 kittens?
Robert Brantley was driving through backroads in northeast Louisiana toward a shooting range when he thought he spotted a kitten near the road. According to NPR’s June 10, 2022 account, Brantley turned around to investigate rather than continue past the animal.
Video coverage reported that Brantley approached a white-and-gray tabby and called, “Look — kitty, kitty.” When he picked up the first kitten, more kittens began appearing from the grass. Twelve additional kittens emerged, producing the startling total of 13.

The rescue therefore was not a planned effort to collect a large litter. Brantley believed he was stopping for one vulnerable animal and discovered a group large enough to overwhelm the simple roadside rescue he had initially imagined.
What happened in the viral kitten video?
The central sequence is simple: Brantley sees one kitten, turns his vehicle around, approaches it, and then watches more kittens come out of hiding. His reaction changes from an attempt to coax one animal closer to trying to understand how many kittens are surrounding him.
As the kittens continued to appear, reports quoted Brantley reacting with “Oh my gosh” and “We’ve got a kitten problem.” Patch highlighted another line, “Hot diggity dog.” Those quotations come from contemporaneous reporting about the video, not from a new independent review of the original footage.

Who was Robert Brantley?
The man in the video was Robert Brantley, a Louisiana resident whose biographical descriptions varied among reports, including professional shooter, marksman, and rifle shooter. That detail is secondary to the rescue itself, and the available coverage does not require it to explain what happened.

A caption attributed to Brantley’s Instagram post, as reproduced by later reporting, said: “Passed a baby kitten I knew wouldn’t make it through the night and the wife has been wanting a cat for the farm; figured I’d stop and rescue the thing.” The wording explains why he stopped, but the caption should be treated as a statement reproduced by coverage rather than as an independently verified original post in this article.
When did the 13-kitten video go viral?
The roadside encounter took place in June 2022, and the first videos were posted during that month. Sun Herald reporting said the first video was uploaded to Instagram on June 7 and that a final update appeared on June 9.
According to a Yahoo News/Insider report published June 21, 2022, one TikTok repost had reached 34 million views. That figure describes one TikTok repost at that date; it is not a permanent or current lifetime total for every version of the video. Reposts on different platforms may have separate view counts.

- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier

Some later accounts said Brantley believed the kittens had been dumped because they appeared clean and friendly. That is Brantley’s reported interpretation, not proof of who left the kittens there. The available reporting does not establish the final home of every kitten.
That uncertainty matters because viral retellings sometimes turn an incomplete update into a definitive ending. The supported account is that Brantley rescued the 13 kittens, cared for them, and worked to find homes. It is not supported here to claim that all 13 were adopted, stayed on the family farm, or went to a particular shelter.
Was the kitten litter definitely abandoned?
No. Reports described the kittens as stray or abandoned, but the available evidence does not independently prove how they came to be beside the road. Brantley said he believed they had been dumped; that belief should remain attributed rather than presented as an established fact.
The kittens’ appearance and behavior also should not be treated as a complete investigation into their history. Clean, friendly kittens may have had human contact, but those observations alone do not identify who left them or whether a mother cat was nearby.

What should you do if you find kittens outdoors?
If you find kittens outdoors, pause before removing them and observe from a safe distance to see whether their mother returns. The ASPCA’s guidance for kittens found outside says the mother may be nearby or temporarily away looking for food.
Assess the kittens before deciding what help they need. Clean, plump, quiet kittens may be receiving care even when the mother is not immediately visible. Kittens that appear ill or injured should be taken to a local shelter, rescue organization, or veterinary clinic as soon as possible; call first to confirm that the facility can accept them.
- Observe first: watch from a distance for the mother cat rather than assuming the litter has been abandoned.
- Check their condition: note whether the kittens look clean, plump, quiet, sick, or injured.
- Get urgent help when needed: contact a shelter, rescue, or veterinarian for ill or injured kittens and call ahead.
- Do not copy the viral situation blindly: Brantley’s roadside encounter does not establish that immediate removal is correct for every outdoor litter.
Why does the story remain memorable?
The video works as a human-interest story because the scale of the problem changes in seconds. Brantley’s apparent plan was to save one kitten; the grass then produced 12 more. The repeated surprise, the kittens’ sudden movement toward him, and Brantley’s improvised reaction made the encounter easy to share and retell.
The most accurate summary is also the simplest: in June 2022, Robert Brantley stopped near Pioneer, Louisiana, believing he had found one kitten in danger. Twelve more appeared, he took all 13 home, and videos of the unexpected rescue spread widely online. The rescue is documented; the complete later outcome for every kitten is not.
