What reasons did Lorenzo Méndez give for the split?
In an interview with Tanya Charry for Univision’s El Gordo y La Flaca, published October 26, 2020, Méndez described several problems in the relationship. Univision reported his account as citing “inseguridades, falta de respeto, mentiras” (“insecurities, lack of respect, lies”), as well as indifference, differences, and plans and goals that did not align. Méndez put it this way: “Fueron muchas cosas, yo creo que inseguridades, falta de respeto, mentiras, hubo indiferencias.” In English: “It was many things. I think insecurities, lack of respect, lies; there was indifference.” The English wording is a translation of his Spanish statement.
Did both of them say the separation was mutual?
No. Their public descriptions differed. On September 17, 2020, Rivera announced their separation on Instagram and described it as mutual and difficult but necessary, according to Telemundo. In the later interview, Méndez said he did not consider the decision mutual and said Rivera had told him it was better to separate. The accounts conflict; neither statement establishes an agreed explanation of how the decision was made.

How the breakup timeline fits together
Reports of relationship trouble appeared before the September announcement. Telemundo’s May 27, 2020 coverage described a marital crisis; it belongs to an earlier period of difficulty, not the definitive public separation announcement. A March 2022 report in El Mexicano said Rivera’s book Invencible included her allegations concerning addiction and domestic violence. Those are allegations attributed to Rivera, not independently substantiated findings in that report. They should not be presented as verified facts or as a jointly accepted reason for the separation. An earlier 2017 relationship pause is also a separate episode and does not establish why the couple’s marriage ended in 2020.
