Lindsay Dewey said her 22-month-old son, Reed, died in February 2025 after a heavy mirror leaning against a wall fell on him at home. The account of how it happened comes from Dewey’s Instagram Stories, as reported by E! News; it is the family’s explanation, not an independently established reconstruction.
What Reed’s family said happened
E! News reported on April 1, 2025, and updated its story on April 2, that Reed’s parents were Lindsay and Eric Dewey. The report does not give an exact date for the incident.
Dewey said she believed Reed had attached one of his suction-cup bowls to the mirror and pulled it back and forth while trying to pry it off. She said she heard the mirror fall and lifted it off him within seconds. The family’s account was that the heavy-duty mirror struck Reed’s head, fracturing his skull and causing a severe traumatic brain injury. Reed later died.
The family said they shared what happened to raise awareness. Their account does not establish the mirror’s brand, model, installation details, or whether a particular anchoring method would have prevented the fall.

What the broader tip-over figures show
In a February 5, 2026 release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said U.S. emergency departments treated an estimated average of 17,800 tip-over injuries annually from 2020 through 2022; 44% of those injured were under 18. The agency also reported 217 tip-over fatalities from 2013 through mid-2023, with 71% involving children ages one to three. These figures cover tip-over incidents broadly, not mirrors specifically, and do not describe Reed’s incident.
How to reduce tip-over risks at home
The CPSC’s general Anchor It! guidance advises caregivers to secure furniture and TVs, follow manufacturers’ instructions, and use appropriate anchoring devices. Its guidance addresses furniture and TVs generally; it does not identify hardware suitable for the mirror involved in Reed’s death.
