Spoilers for the 2002 animated film. Stitch stays with Lilo and becomes part of her family with Nani. The ending is less about defeating Stitch’s pursuers than about his change from an experiment focused on survival into someone capable of caring for others. Disney’s synopsis describes Lilo’s faith in ʻohana as what unlocks Stitch’s heart.

What happens to Lilo, Stitch, and Nani at the end?

The 2002 animated film ends with Stitch belonging with Lilo and Nani. Lilo’s bond with him is the emotional center of the resolution, while Nani remains part of the family setting around them. The story’s answer is not simply that Stitch escapes capture: he has found a home and learned to care about someone beyond himself.

That reading follows the film’s setup. Lilo adopts Stitch believing he is a dog, but he is actually an escaped genetic experiment. At first, Stitch uses Lilo as a human shield against the people pursuing him, as D23’s official synopsis puts it. Over the course of the story, that self-protective motive gives way to attachment.

Why does Stitch change?

Stitch begins as a creature made for destruction, with no meaningful connection to anyone. Lilo’s commitment to ʻohana gives him a different experience: someone treats him as family rather than as a weapon or a problem to contain. D23 says Lilo’s faith in ʻohana unlocks Stitch’s heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else. Disney Animation also describes family bonds and friendship as central themes of the film.

Lilo & Stitch
  • Experience this funny and touching live-action reimagining of Disney?s animated classic. When a lonely girl named Lilo adopts Stitch, an alien ?puppy,? Stitch helps to mend Lilo?s broken family ? but not without wreaking hilarious havoc on the Hawaiian Islands.

This makes the ending a story of chosen family: belonging is built through care and loyalty, not simply granted by origin. That is an interpretation of the film’s thematic resolution, rather than a claim about a legal arrangement.

What does “ʻohana means family” mean in the ending?

Barry Levitt’s May 21, 2025 TIME article reproduces the film line, “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind.” The line gives the ending its emotional principle: Lilo’s idea of family includes Stitch even when he is difficult, frightening, or unwanted elsewhere.

Lilo & Stitch
  • Lilo?s an independent little girl; Stitch is a mischievous creature from outer space, and when their worlds collide, it?s love ? and chaos! ? at first sight.

Levitt’s article also quotes Jumba reflecting on Stitch: “I never gave him a greater purpose. What must it be like to have nothing? Not even memories to visit in the middle of the night?” The thought helps explain the loneliness beneath Stitch’s original design and why connection matters to his transformation.

Is this the same ending as the live-action Lilo & Stitch?

No. This explanation is about the original animated Lilo & Stitch, released June 21, 2002, and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, according to D23 and Walt Disney Animation Studios. A 2025 TIME review discusses the live-action adaptation, but the existence of that version is not a reason to import its plot details into the 2002 film’s ending. The official sources cited here do not establish enough scene-by-scene detail to compare the endings reliably.

What comes after the 2002 film?

The original is followed by other animated films. D23 identifies Stitch! The Movie as a direct-to-video sequel released August 26, 2003, and records Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch as a 2005 release. Disney’s page for the latter describes Lilo, Nani, and others working together to help Stitch. These later stories continue the franchise; they are not part of the original film’s ending.

For a rewatch, Disney+ lists the original film and related franchise titles, though streaming availability and catalog terms can vary by territory and date. Its listing also flags flashing-light sequences or patterns as potentially affecting photosensitive viewers.
