That is the judge’s reported view—not a final UK inquest finding, and “trying to escape” is a headline paraphrase rather than the official wording.
What the judge said about the balcony
Payne, 31, died on 16 October 2024 after falling from a balcony at the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires. In its account of Judge Laura Bruniard’s December 2024 decision, Argentina’s Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that she believed Payne wanted to leave by way of the balcony. The stated basis was forensic evidence that he had not lost his balance.
Bruniard’s Spanish statement was: “Sostengo que el nombrado quiso irse por el balcĂłn del lugar donde fue dejado porque los forenses dieron cuenta que no perdiĂł el equilibrio. De esta forma se produjo la caĂda.” In translation: “I maintain that he wanted to leave by way of the balcony from where he had been left because the forensic doctors reported that he had not lost his balance. That is how the fall occurred.” The wording conveys the judge’s interpretation of the evidence; it does not establish, as a final finding, exactly how Payne came to be on the balcony or what he intended.
The prosecutor’s office also quoted Bruniard saying that taking Payne to room 310 “in that state” created a legally disapproved risk to his life. This was part of her reported reasoning in the Argentine decision, not a conclusion by the UK coroner.

What the Argentine proceedings established—and did not
In the December 2024 procedural decision, Bruniard processed three people on manslaughter allegations and two on allegations of supplying drugs. Processing a person on an allegation is not a conviction or a final determination of guilt.
In February 2025, the prosecutor’s office reported that an Argentine appeals court overturned the processing of the three defendants on manslaughter allegations and upheld pretrial detention for the two people accused of supplying drugs. That account describes the appellate outcome at that time; it does not, by itself, resolve every later procedural question.

What the UK inquest has said
At the inquest opening in January 2025, the medical cause of death was recorded as “polytrauma,” meaning multiple injuries. That describes the injuries that caused death; it does not determine the circumstances of the fall or adopt the Argentine judge’s account of Payne’s actions.
At a pre-inquest review in May 2026, Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said he had received no further disclosure of evidence from Argentina via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office since the previous review. He said he was awaiting further developments. The hearing was adjourned to another pre-inquest review due in December. The available account does not establish whether that later review took place or what it decided.

So, did Liam Payne try to escape through the balcony?
The precise, supported answer is that Judge Bruniard was reported as believing Payne wanted to leave through the balcony, citing forensic evidence that he had not lost his balance. “Escape” is not the exact wording quoted by the prosecutor’s office, and the UK inquest had not reached a final conclusion in the latest procedural account available here.
