The roof of Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed at 12:44 a.m. on April 8, 2025, during a merengue performance. The disaster killed hundreds and prompted separate government technical and criminal investigations; later prosecution testimony has offered a cause, but testimony is not a court verdict.
How the collapse response unfolded
The Dominican Republic’s 911 service reported receiving more than 100 emergency calls. Its April 8, 2025 release listed an initial deployment of 77 ambulances, eight fire service units, 30 Civil Defense rescuers, 200 police officers and 50 military rescuers, among other units. Those figures describe the response in that release, not a final count of everyone who took part.
Associated Press reported on the day of the collapse that emergency crews were searching the site and that authorities had not yet established what caused the roof to fail or when the building had last been inspected. The uncertainty in that early coverage matters: the initial accounts came while rescue work and casualty reporting were still developing.
How many people died in the Jet Set collapse?
The reported toll changed over time. The counts below are dated snapshots from different reports, not figures to combine or treat as simultaneous.

Associated Press reported in June 2025 that rescue crews had recovered 189 survivors after 53 hours. That is a dated rescue figure, not a casualty total.
What investigations followed?
On April 10, 2025, the Presidency announced a technical expert team coordinated by Onesvie, the National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings. Its stated task was to determine the causes of the collapse. The announcement distinguished that government technical study from the Public Ministry’s criminal investigation, emphasizing the latter’s independence and its role in determining possible judicial steps.

These were separate processes: one was an executive-branch technical inquiry, and the other was a criminal case. The existence of a technical team does not itself establish a cause or decide criminal responsibility.
What caused the Jet Set roof collapse?
In a September 11, 2026 report, government news outlet Central de Noticias said three experts presented by prosecutors testified that excess weight on the roof led to beam fatigue and failure. The report identified the witnesses as structural engineer Leonardo Reyes Madera, forensic pathologist Máximo Corominas and international expert engineer Eduardo Fierro.

Deputy prosecutor Wilson Camacho said the experts concluded that additional weight had been put on the roof without calculating the load. According to the report, the cited sources of weight included multiple layers of roof finishing, water tanks, structures, air-conditioning units, suspended sound equipment and lights. This is the prosecution’s account of its experts’ testimony during trial—not a final judicial determination of the cause.
What is the status of the criminal case?
Associated Press reported on June 12, 2025, that Antonio and Maribel Espaillat had been arrested and described allegations being pursued at that point. Central de Noticias’ September 11, 2026 account described the pair as being prosecuted for involuntary homicide and involuntary bodily injury. An arrest, allegation, charge or expert’s testimony does not establish guilt. The cited September report describes trial testimony; it does not announce a final verdict.

Who were among the victims?
Associated Press identified singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing; Montecristi governor Nelsy Cruz; former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel; and Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera among those who died. These are only some of the people identified in coverage, not a complete list of victims. The dated official casualty count conveys the scale of the loss more reliably than a selection of prominent names.
