Spoilers for FBI Season 7, Episode 22, “A New Day,” and the Season 8 premiere. The traitor inside the New York field office is Deputy Assistant Director Simon Keane, who is secretly leading the anti-government group Forefront’s operation. The team exposes and arrests him, but the finale ends on a separate cliffhanger: Isobel Castille collapses. Season 8 later confirms that she survives.
How Forefront gets inside the FBI
“A New Day,” which aired May 20, 2025, opens with Jubal Valentine meeting a whistleblower named Kevin at a secret FBI intake facility. Forefront attacks before Kevin can fully explain the danger. Jubal survives wounded, but the attack reveals that the threat is not limited to outsiders: an operative has infiltrated the Bureau.
A USB drive Kevin leaves behind points the team to FBI-issued cell phones rigged with explosives. The tampered phones turn the office’s own equipment into an attack vector. The episode’s official description says the team discovers that an anti-government group has infiltrated the FBI. CBS lists the episode as Season 7, Episode 22, “A New Day”; its official synopsis describes the assault and infiltration.
Who is the traitor?
It is Simon Keane, the Deputy Assistant Director overseeing the operation. After the explosion, Maggie overhears Keane reveal his role in Forefront. The episode initially points suspicion toward ADIC John Reynolds, Keane’s superior, and reports Reynolds dead in the blast. That misdirection makes Keane’s betrayal more dangerous: he is positioned within the Bureau’s leadership, not merely helping the group from outside.

Keane orders the Joint Operations Center team to surrender its weapons and badges. Isobel, whom the blast left apparently dead, is alive and joins her colleagues at an abandoned subway station. The team has lost the protection of its usual office and equipment, but it still has a way to draw Keane into the open.
How the team catches Keane
Isobel pretends to defect and secretly records Keane admitting his involvement. She also secures testimony from his lead henchman. Meanwhile, the team arms itself with what it can find and prepares for the agents Keane sends into the subway tunnels. They defeat the attackers, and Isobel returns with police to arrest Keane.

That resolves the infiltration plot in the finale: Keane is exposed, the team has evidence against him, and he is taken into custody. The story does not end with the traitor still at large.
Is Isobel dead at the end of Season 7?
No. The explosion does not kill Isobel; she survives it and helps bring Keane down. But after the arrest, she addresses the team, begins repeating herself and scrambling her words, then collapses. Maggie cannot find a pulse. The Season 7 finale ends there, without explaining what caused the collapse or whether Isobel will recover.

What Season 8 reveals
The Season 8 premiere confirms that Isobel survives. That later answer does not change the original finale’s cliffhanger: at the end of Season 7, her condition is deliberately unresolved. In a later Season 8 episode description, CBS says Isobel must name her successor before moving into a new role. TVLine’s Season 8 premiere recap covers the follow-through on her fate, and CBS’s Season 8 episode listings include the later successor detail.
