Letterboxd’s first Video Store rentals launched on December 10, 2025—not “this week” in 2026. The temporary four-film Unreleased Gems selection ran through January 9, 2026, while a separate five-film Lost and Found shelf was added to the store’s ongoing library. Letterboxd continued publishing new Video Store shelves in 2026, so the launch lineup is historical, but the service did not end with it.
What Letterboxd Video Store is
Letterboxd Video Store is a curated digital-rental storefront connected to Letterboxd’s film-discovery platform, rather than a conventional subscription service with one monthly fee for a full catalog. Its releases are organized into themed shelves. Availability and rental prices can vary by film and country, and a title appearing in Letterboxd’s catalog does not guarantee it can be rented in every territory.

The original “available this week” headline referred to the announcement published on December 8, 2025. Letterboxd said the first rentals would go live two days later, on December 10, Eastern Time. Its launch announcement introduced the four-film Unreleased Gems shelf; a separate Lost and Found announcement covered five additional films.

These were the launch shelf’s four films. Letterboxd scheduled them to be available from December 10, 2025 through January 9, 2026, Eastern Time. That was the shelf’s availability window—not a statement about how long a customer had to finish watching after renting.

Territory lists are title-specific: there was no single country count that applied to every film. The dates and locations above describe the original launch offer, not present-day rental availability.
The other launch shelf: “Lost and Found”
The first Video Store program also included a distinct five-film Lost and Found shelf: Tiger on the Beat (1988), the Chow Yun-Fat Hong Kong action film; Kisapmata (1981), a Filipino psychological horror film; It Must Be Heaven (2019), Elia Suleiman’s comedy; Poison (1991), Todd Haynes’s feature debut; and Before We Vanish (2017), Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s science-fiction drama.

Letterboxd presented these as additions to an ongoing library, unlike the explicitly time-limited Unreleased Gems selection. Its launch copy described the Tiger on the Beat presentation as a new 4K restoration and Kisapmata as a digital exclusive. Those descriptions were territory-dependent: for example, the announcement identified the latter two as digital exclusives in the United States and Canada, not necessarily worldwide. An “ongoing library” also does not guarantee a film will remain rentable forever or in every country.
What did rentals cost, and how long could you watch?
Letterboxd said rental prices varied by title and territory; its launch announcement did not give one universal price. Because prices and availability can change, check the individual listing in the Video Store before deciding to rent.

The December 2025 announcement establishes the Unreleased Gems shelf’s end date, but not a standard post-purchase viewing deadline. It also does not establish current device support, subtitle or audio options, refund terms, or whether a particular account or membership is required. Check the current listing and store FAQ for those details rather than assuming they are the same for every film.

Yes. Letterboxd’s platform archive documents further Video Store programming during 2026, including Year in Review Selects, Sneak Peeks, Oscars Selects, later Unreleased Gems shelves, New Releases and Kit Lazer Curates. That supports describing the first rentals as the start of an ongoing curated program, not as a one-off service that ended when the original four-film window closed.

For viewers seeking festival films, international cinema or restorations, a curated rental shelf can make less widely distributed films easier to discover. The trade-offs are practical: availability is country- and title-specific, prices are not uniform, and the launch dates do not tell you whether any particular film can still be rented now. If a listing is unavailable in your region, check the film’s distributor, local cinemas or festival programs, or other transactional stores such as Apple TV and Prime Video; those are possible alternatives, not confirmed current providers for these specific titles.
