What happened when DiCaprio saw River Phoenix?
DiCaprio recalled the incident in an Esquire interview, as quoted in a May 22, 2019, report by The Indian Express. He described Phoenix as an actor he revered and said he had long hoped for the chance to meet him.

Did Leonardo DiCaprio ever meet River Phoenix?
Not in the encounter DiCaprio described. He saw Phoenix and tried to approach him, but did not get to shake his hand or speak with him. Calling it a “meeting” is shorthand for an attempted encounter, not a completed introduction.
Why did DiCaprio remember the moment?
DiCaprio said he later learned Phoenix had been on his way to The Viper Room. Phoenix collapsed and died outside the club at age 23; The Indian Express describes the cause as drug intoxication. DiCaprio reflected on the loss of an actor he admired and whose work mattered to him and his friends.
Phoenix’s films included Stand by Me, Running on Empty and My Own Private Idaho. Those roles help explain why DiCaprio regarded him so highly, but they are context for the story—not independent confirmation of the private encounter.

This story is distinct from other reported encounters sometimes associated with DiCaprio. A 2000 Guardian profile recounts an early-career meeting and scene read with Robert De Niro for This Boy’s Life. A 2021 W Magazine report covers a viral interaction between DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Art+Film Gala. Neither is the River Phoenix party anecdote.
