Capaldi discussed his diagnosis and shoulder twitching in 2022; Eilish described trying to suppress visible tics in a 2026 interview. Their accounts offer two personal examples—not a complete celebrity list or a guide to how Tourette syndrome affects everyone.
What Lewis Capaldi has said about Tourette syndrome
Capaldi publicly discussed his Tourette syndrome diagnosis in 2022, describing shoulder twitching and saying he was learning ways to cope, according to The Guardian’s report. In a January 2024 statement, the Tourette Association of America attributed a later update to Capaldi: time spent focusing on his health had improved his management of Tourette syndrome and anxiety. That is his account of his own experience, not evidence that one approach works for everyone.
After Capaldi spoke publicly, Emma McNally, then identified by The Guardian as CEO of Tourettes Action, said: “Lewis Capaldi speaking out about his diagnosis will hopefully encourage others who are in the public eye to do the same.”
What Billie Eilish has said about tics
In a May 2026 interview reported by The Guardian, Eilish described trying to suppress visible tics while talking with someone. She also said that some people cannot suppress their tics in the same way. These are her comments about her experience; they should not be generalized to everyone with Tourette syndrome.

How Tourette syndrome and tics are described medically
The CDC describes Tourette syndrome as a nervous system condition involving repeated, sudden movements or sounds called tics. Motor tics are movements; vocal tics are sounds. Symptoms can vary and change over time. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, and the type and duration of tics help distinguish Tourette syndrome from other tic disorders. See the CDC’s About Tourette Syndrome and Five Things To Know About Tourette Syndrome pages, both updated or reviewed August 5, 2026.
A tic is not necessarily a spoken word, and Tourette syndrome should not be equated with coprolalia, the involuntary utterance of socially inappropriate or taboo words. The CDC’s description is broader: Tourette syndrome involves motor and vocal tics, which can take different forms.

Does everyone with Tourette syndrome need treatment?
No. The CDC says many people do not need treatment when their tics do not interfere with daily life. When tics cause pain or injury, disrupt activities, or cause stress, medication and behavioral treatments are among the available options. There is no cure, but treatment can help manage tics. These general points are not personal medical advice; a healthcare professional can discuss an individual’s symptoms and options. See the CDC’s treatment guidance.
How many people have Tourette syndrome in the UK?
A figure reported by The Guardian in 2022, attributed to Tourettes Action, was approximately 300,000 people in the UK. It is a dated estimate, not an established current count. The same report covered Capaldi’s disclosure; it does not establish how many celebrities have Tourette syndrome.

Are these the only celebrities with Tourette syndrome?
No. Capaldi and Eilish are two public figures whose statements are supported by the sources linked here. Those sources do not establish a definitive or exhaustive celebrity roster. Public disclosures are personal accounts, and the experiences they describe should not be treated as representative of everyone with Tourette syndrome.
