Kate Cassidy said she returned home because a visit she and Liam Payne expected to last about five days had stretched to roughly two weeks, and she needed to go home. In a later interview, she also cited responsibilities at home, including their dog. Those are Cassidy’s stated reasons; the available reporting does not support claims that she knew Payne would die or that her departure caused his death.
What Cassidy said about leaving Argentina
In a TikTok explanation reported by The Independent in October 2024, Cassidy described a trip that had lasted longer than planned: “We were supposed to be there for five days,” she said, “it turned into two weeks and I was just like, I need to go home.” The same report said she disliked staying in one place for too long.
In a February 2025 interview reported by ABC News, Cassidy added that she had responsibilities at home, including caring for their dog. She said she had not expected Payne to die. This was her later recollection, rather than a finding by investigators.
When she left—and what happened next
Contemporary reporting placed Cassidy’s return to Florida about two days before Payne died. Payne died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a balcony at the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires. The Associated Press reported that prosecutors’ initial account found no sign of third-party involvement at that stage and that the autopsy findings were consistent with a fall. That was early reporting, not a final account of every subsequent legal development.

What the Argentina proceedings established
On November 7, 2024, Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 said investigators had examined witness testimony, more than 800 hours of video, Payne’s phone data and other records. The office announced charges against three people, including Payne’s companion during the Argentina stay and two people accused of supplying drugs. These were allegations and procedural charges, not proof of a final judgment. The prosecution’s update is available from the prosecutor’s office.
In a later procedural update, prosecutors said two people would face trial on drug-supply charges. A national criminal court then declared itself incompetent and sent the case to the judiciary of the City of Buenos Aires. The venue change and trial referral describe the case’s procedural status; neither establishes a conviction. The prosecution’s update reports the referral.
