The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival, screened at the New York Film Festival, and had its first Minneapolis screening scheduled for October 7, 2026, at Riverview Theater. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that the Riverview screening had sold out and that another was planned for November 4 at the Cedar Cultural Center.
What is They’re Here about?
The documentary portrays people in Minnesota confronting and monitoring immigration agents during Operation Metro Surge. Poitras described the residents’ actions as “an amazing resistance,” and said: “There were so many people who did incredibly courageous things at an enormous scale.” Those are the directors’ characterizations of the response, not a measure of the operation or a comprehensive account of it.

According to the Star Tribune’s October 7, 2026 report, the film includes images of an unmarked SUV circling a south Minneapolis block in winter, masked agents tackling a person blowing a white whistle, and a man recounting how he hid in a car trunk while his son drove him to work. These are scenes described in the report; the article does not independently verify each depicted event.
How did Poitras and Mueller make the film?
Mueller, a Minneapolis filmmaker who has lived in Minnesota for nearly 18 years, directed and shot the film. She combined her own footage with video crowdsourced from others. Poitras, known for Citizenfour, is identified in the report as an Oscar-winning filmmaker.

The directors said they wanted the violence to feel frightening instead of becoming familiar through repeated news coverage. Poitras explained: “One was to de-normalize the violence that we were seeing coming out of Minneapolis at this time that was sort of constantly playing on the news, to make it completely terrifying.”
Why use horror elements?
Mueller said horror can draw fear from what remains unseen. Rather than reactively chasing events with the camera, the filmmakers used composed shots that let events unfold in front of them. Poitras compared the film’s dystopian premise to Children of Men and called the setting “a full-blown paramilitary occupation of a U.S. city.” That phrase is Poitras’s description, not a neutral legal or governmental designation.

What did the directors say about the people they filmed?
Poitras praised residents who continued going out to follow ICE despite harsh physical conditions and deaths. Mueller described the solidarity she saw this way: “These are our people, and you cannot steal them from us ― and we won’t let you.” The statements reflect the directors’ view of the community response.
