Choose Larix Broadcaster if your phone camera is the source; choose OBS Studio if you need a desktop production with multiple sources, scenes, audio mixing, or transitions. Neither is established as the more reliable choice for running a 24/7 stream. And if by “24/7” you mean looping prerecorded videos unattended, that is a cloud playout job—not simply a choice between two camera encoders.
First decide what “24/7 stream” means
A continuous live camera feed and an unattended loop of existing videos are different workflows. Larix Broadcaster and OBS are encoders: they send a live source to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide separately lists cloud services for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos, including Gyre and Upstream. Do not assume that either encoder provides managed video playout or unattended uptime.
Larix Broadcaster vs OBS at a glance
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Use a phone camera with a mobile-only setup | Larix Broadcaster | YouTube lists Larix as a mobile encoder, and Softvelum documents how to connect it to YouTube. |
| Combine several video or screen sources, scenes, audio, and transitions | OBS Studio | OBS documents multiple source types and scenes, transitions, audio mixing, hotkeys, preview, and multiview. |
| Use a phone camera as a remote contribution to a desktop show | Larix into OBS | Softvelum documents a Larix-to-OBS workflow, so the tools can be combined rather than treated as alternatives. |
| Loop prerecorded videos without an operator at the encoder | Cloud playout service | YouTube lists cloud services for this distinct 24/7 workflow; compare their current terms and capabilities separately. |
| Pick a proven 24/7 reliability winner between Larix and OBS | No supported winner | The official materials describe setup and features, not a head-to-head endurance or uptime test. |
When Larix Broadcaster is the better fit
Start with Larix when the phone itself is the camera and you want to send that feed to YouTube without first building a desktop scene collection. It is a mobile encoder, and its YouTube RTMP setup uses the server URL and stream name or key. Use video-plus-audio mode for the connection and follow YouTube’s recommendations for the stream.
A phone-based encoder does not, by itself, establish that a device can safely run unattended indefinitely. Power, heat, network continuity, and what happens after an interruption depend on the specific setup; test that setup rather than treating the app as an uptime guarantee.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When OBS Studio is the better fit
OBS is the stronger starting point when the show needs a computer to assemble its output: for example, a documentary stream with a program feed, slides, screen capture, multiple video inputs, planned scene changes, and a mixed audio track. OBS is free, open-source desktop software for recording and live streaming. Its production controls—such as scenes, transitions, audio mixing, hotkeys, preview, and multiview—are useful when the show needs more than a single camera feed.
OBS still depends on the computer, its power, the network connection, and the configured sources. Its feature set is not evidence of guaranteed continuous operation. Plan and test the specific machine and stream workflow, including what an interruption looks like.

How to connect either workflow to YouTube
- Prepare the channel. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live stream. A first-time live stream may need to be enabled before you can go live, so do not leave activation until broadcast time.
- Copy the destination details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings. In Larix, the RTMP connection combines the server URL and stream name or key; OBS also needs the YouTube destination and key.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, screen recordings, or public tutorials. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before relying on it again.
- Choose the correct source and mode. Send the intended live camera or desktop production feed. For a Larix RTMP connection, use video-plus-audio mode. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and requirements for the stream settings.
- Test before the scheduled broadcast. Confirm that the intended video and audio reach YouTube and that the configured sources behave as expected. Test interruption and recovery with the actual device, network, and encoder rather than assuming an app will restart or reconnect in a particular way.
What YouTube’s 12-hour archive note means
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This is an automatic-archive threshold, not a universal maximum broadcast duration and not proof that a stream longer than 12 hours cannot run. Nor does it show that Larix or OBS will keep a stream uninterrupted for 24 hours. If you need an archive, plan around YouTube’s stated under-12-hour rule and verify the resulting archive in your channel.

If the goal is to keep uploaded recordings playing as a live YouTube stream while no camera operator or encoder computer is running, evaluate cloud playout instead of treating Larix and OBS as turnkey 24/7 playback services. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre and Upstream for related 24/7 workflows. Their current pricing, terms, and exact capabilities should be checked with those services; the cited guide does not establish a comparative recommendation between them.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the encoder connection: confirm that you copied the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the matching encoder fields. Check that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
- The stream is connected but the picture or sound is wrong: verify the selected source and the audio path in the encoder. In Larix, use video-plus-audio mode; in OBS, check the intended scene and audio mix before going live.
- A first broadcast cannot start: check whether live streaming still needs to be enabled for the channel, and complete that setup ahead of the broadcast.
- A long stream is not archived as expected: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Do not interpret that note as a guarantee of archiving longer streams.
- A 24/7 stream stops after a device or connection interruption: neither the cited Larix nor OBS materials establish an unattended recovery guarantee. Test the exact power, network, device, and restart arrangement you intend to use, or use a cloud playout workflow for prerecorded content.
