A YouTube live pipeline in GStreamer captures or reads video and audio, converts them to compatible formats, encodes them, muxes them into FLV, and sends that feed to YouTube over RTMPS. You need the ingest endpoint and stream name from YouTube Live Control Room, plus a GStreamer build with suitable encoders and an RTMPS-capable sink. Because sink availability and properties vary by build—and the older rtmpsink is deprecated in GStreamer 1.28—treat the pipeline below as a design sketch, not a universally runnable command.
What you need before building the pipeline
- A YouTube account permitted to live stream. YouTube may reject API stream creation if the account lacks live-streaming permission or is blocked from streaming.
- A live event and its ingest details: an RTMPS endpoint and a private stream name (sometimes called a stream key).
- A GStreamer installation that includes the source elements, converters, H.264 and AAC encoders, parsers, FLV muxer, and a sink that can deliver RTMPS with the required TLS behavior.
- A stable, sufficiently capable host and network connection for the chosen video and audio formats.
Keep the stream name secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event.
Get an endpoint and stream name from YouTube
Set up an event manually
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the ingestion endpoint and stream name. Use the RTMPS endpoint when available for the encoder workflow described in YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Keep the endpoint and stream name separate until you know how the selected GStreamer sink expects its location. Do not paste the stream name into public logs, screenshots, or examples.
Manage events through the YouTube API
The API models the scheduled event as a liveBroadcast and the incoming feed as a liveStream. A broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream can be reused for multiple events. Create or retrieve the liveStream resource and read its ingestion information, then associate it with the intended broadcast as described in the YouTube broadcast and stream guide and LiveStreams reference.
For API-created streams, the insert request requires a title and CDN settings specifying ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. Creation can fail if live streaming is unavailable to the account; see LiveStreams: insert.

Choose the ingest protocol and verify GStreamer support
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements include an rtmps URL, a valid endpoint and application path, port 443, and TLS SNI set to the target server hostname for authentication. A cleartext RTMP connection does not meet those requirements. Check the current YouTube RTMPS guidance and confirm that your chosen sink actually implements the needed TLS and SNI behavior.
GStreamer’s plugin index documents elements including x264enc, flvmux, and the older rtmpsink. However, the exact installed elements and their properties depend on the build. GStreamer 1.28 release notes say the librtmp-based rtmpsink and rtmpsrc are deprecated and scheduled for removal in the next release cycle. Before relying on a command in production, check your installed GStreamer version and inspect the selected sink’s documentation and properties. Do not assume an element named rtmpsink is present or that it satisfies YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.

Assemble the media graph
The usual architecture is two branches—one for video and one for audio—which meet at an FLV muxer before the RTMPS-capable sink:
video source ! videoconvert ! video caps ! H.264 encoder ! h264parse ! mux.video
audio source ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! AAC encoder ! aacparse ! mux.audio
flvmux name=mux streamable=true ! RTMPS-capable sink location="<YouTube RTMPS endpoint>/<stream name>"
This is an architectural sketch, not a verified, copy-paste command for every GStreamer build. Replace the source elements, caps, encoders, and sink with elements and property values available on your host. The plugin index identifies x264enc as a libx264 H.264 encoder, flvmux as a muxer for video and audio into FLV, and rtmpsink as a sender of FLV over RTMP; consult the GStreamer plugin index for the installed plugin ecosystem.

Video branch
Use a source appropriate to the production—such as a capture device, test source, or file source—then convert to the format accepted by the encoder. Set caps to the intended resolution and frame rate, encode as H.264, and parse the encoded stream before it reaches the muxer. The chosen output should match the stream configuration in YouTube. The available sources do not establish a current numeric bitrate or frame-rate prescription, so use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the output you intend to publish rather than treating an arbitrary sample number as a requirement.
Audio branch
Provide one audio track, convert and resample as needed by the selected encoder, encode as AAC, and parse it before sending it to the muxer. Check that the branch is connected and actually produces buffers; a video-only or audio-only feed can trigger a YouTube health warning.

Mux and send
Connect the parsed H.264 and AAC branches to the FLV muxer’s video and audio inputs. Send the resulting FLV stream to a sink configured for the exact YouTube RTMPS endpoint, stream name, TLS, and SNI behavior. Sink-specific location syntax differs, so use that element’s documentation rather than assuming that joining endpoint and stream name with a slash works in every implementation.
Configure output without guessing at YouTube requirements
- Codec: use supported video encoding (the sketch uses H.264) and a compatible audio track (the sketch uses AAC). YouTube health diagnostics can flag an unsupported video codec.
- Resolution and frame rate: choose these deliberately and make them consistent with the YouTube stream configuration. The API’s CDN settings include resolution and frame rate. Follow current YouTube encoder guidance for numeric recommendations; none is asserted here.
- GOP: configure a closed GOP. YouTube health diagnostics include open-GOP warnings.
- Tracks: ensure both one audio track and one video track reach the muxer. Confirm negotiated caps and inspect errors if either branch stalls.
- Transport: use the RTMPS scheme and required endpoint, port 443, TLS, and SNI. Do not substitute cleartext RTMP for RTMPS.
Test the feed and publish
- Start with a controlled test source or local source so that source-device problems are not confused with ingest problems.
- Run the pipeline and inspect its negotiated caps and bus messages. Confirm that video and audio reach the muxer and that the sink connects without TLS, authentication, or location errors.
- Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and check stream status and health. Wait for YouTube to report an incoming feed before starting or scheduling the broadcast as appropriate for the event.
- Watch the live preview and audio meters, then publish the event when the feed is healthy.
For automated setups, monitor both the GStreamer process and YouTube’s stream health; a process that remains open is not proof that a valid feed is reaching YouTube.

Troubleshoot an invalid or unhealthy ingest
Start with YouTube’s stream state and health message, then check the endpoint, stream name, RTMPS scheme and port, installed sink, negotiated caps, and GStreamer bus errors. This order separates destination, transport, plugin, and media-graph failures.
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| No incoming feed or connection failure | Verify that the endpoint and stream name belong to the selected event. Confirm the sink’s location syntax, that the URL uses rtmps, and that the connection uses port 443 with TLS SNI for the destination hostname. Check the sink’s own connection and TLS errors. |
| Missing video | Check that the video source is producing buffers, caps are negotiated, the encoder and parser are present, and the video branch is linked to the muxer’s video input. |
| Missing audio | Check source availability and channel/caps negotiation, then confirm conversion, resampling, AAC encoding, parsing, and the muxer’s audio link. |
| Unsupported video codec | Confirm the encoded output codec—not merely the source format—and use a codec supported by YouTube’s live ingest guidance. |
| Open GOP warning | Change the encoder’s GOP settings so the output uses a closed GOP, then check YouTube health again. |
| Primary and backup settings mismatch | If using primary and backup feeds, compare their configured stream settings and make them match; YouTube health diagnostics can flag mismatches. |
| Element not found or unknown property | Inspect the installed GStreamer version and plugins. The older librtmp-based rtmpsink is deprecated in GStreamer 1.28, and element availability or properties vary by build; choose and validate a supported sink implementation. |
Choose manual or API-managed setup
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room | A person setting up individual events and copying ingest details manually. | Simple to operate, but event and stream selection remain manual. |
| YouTube Live API | Software that needs to create or retrieve broadcasts and streams programmatically. | Supports automation and stream reuse across events, but requires API setup and account permissions; the broadcast-to-stream relationship must be managed correctly. |
Whether to reuse a stream or create one per broadcast depends on how you organize events and automation. The API model permits reuse, but each broadcast is bound to one stream. Likewise, software encoding versus another installed encoder implementation is a host-specific choice: the available sources do not establish a performance advantage without testing on the target system.
