YouTube must have live streaming enabled for your channel, and the encoder needs a supported video and audio configuration. A cloud server can keep the process running when your home computer is off, but neither the server nor the full route to YouTube guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
What you are setting up
The basic path is: a video file or other permitted program source feeds an encoder on your Hetzner server; the encoder sends the live feed to YouTube’s ingest service; viewers watch it on YouTube. For a pre-recorded programme, configure the encoder to repeat the file or playlist. For a camera feed or a more elaborate composition, the source and processing requirements differ.
You do not need Hetzner’s Owncast app just to send a cloud-generated feed to YouTube. Owncast is a separate self-hosted streaming and chat service; consider it only if you specifically want to operate that additional service.
Before you create the server
Confirm YouTube channel eligibility
Enable live streaming for the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and copy its stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; reset it if you think it has been exposed.

Choose a server and location based on evidence, not assumptions
Hetzner’s current server prices, outbound-traffic allowance, and the best-performing location for a connection from India are not established here. Check the live Hetzner console and pricing information before ordering. Compare the current price and traffic terms, and test sustained connectivity from the region you select to YouTube’s ingest service before relying on it for a continuous channel.
Server size depends on the workload. A simple file loop and software encoding have different CPU needs from a complex live composition. There is no universal instance size established for every 24/7 stream, so do not choose solely from a generic recommendation.
Configure the YouTube stream
Use RTMPS for ordinary low-latency ingest
Set the encoder to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint and port 443. RTMPS encrypts the stream in transit to YouTube. YouTube also supports RTMP, HLS, and DASH ingest, but HLS and DASH have different latency and codec characteristics; they are not required for a straightforward continuous stream.

Choose codec, frame rate, and bitrate together
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use AAC or MP3 audio. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and leave headroom rather than configuring delivery at the very edge of a connection’s capacity.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a promise about a Hetzner server’s network capacity. The cited guidance was current when accessed in 2026; check YouTube’s current encoder guidance when configuring a stream. YouTube transcodes live streams for different viewing formats, so viewers may not receive the same encoded rendition you send.
Set up the Hetzner server and network access
- Create the Cloud Server: choose a current server plan and location in Hetzner’s Cloud console after reviewing its current price and traffic terms. Pick capacity appropriate to your source and encoding workload rather than assuming a plan size applies to every stream.
- Install your encoder: install and configure an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server. Configure its input (for example, a video file or playlist), output codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, two-second keyframes, and AAC or MP3 audio to match YouTube’s guidance.
- Set the YouTube destination: configure the valid YouTube ingest endpoint, RTMPS protocol, port 443, and the stream key from the Live Control Room. Do not place the key in a publicly readable script, log, or shared message.
- Restrict server access: Hetzner makes server management, security, and firewall configuration the customer’s responsibility. Cloud Firewalls deny inbound traffic unless you explicitly allow it. Permit only necessary inbound access, such as SSH from trusted administration addresses. Cloud Firewalls are free; that does not mean the server, traffic, backups, or other services are free.
- Check outbound rules: outbound traffic is allowed by default when no outbound rules are configured. If you add explicit outbound restrictions, allow DNS resolution and the required connection to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest on TCP port 443.
- Run a representative preflight: test with the actual kind of motion and audio the channel will carry. Check the upload path and YouTube stream health before treating the system as ready for a continuous schedule.
The exact installation commands and service configuration depend on the server’s operating system, encoder build, and whether you are looping a file or producing a live composition. The available technical guidance does not establish one universal command or server unit for those different setups.

Make the stream recoverable and observable
Run the encoder under a service supervisor configured to restart it if the process exits. Preserve logs somewhere you can reach, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and alert an operator if the stream stops or becomes unhealthy. Restarting a failed process can address an encoder exit; it cannot fix a bad stream key, a rejected configuration, an unavailable source file, or a network path that remains down. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during a stream.
Hetzner’s German Cloud Server SLA page, last changed on 2026-03-16, describes a 99.9% monthly availability target for each Cloud Server, measured by calendar month. That is a monthly target, not a guarantee of zero interruptions. Application, configuration, ingest, and other network failures can also interrupt a stream.

Before putting a recording, music track, film, documentary, or playlist on a public channel, confirm the permissions and platform rules that apply to that material and channel. Reusing a recording is not, by itself, proof that you have permission to broadcast it. Stream health checks technical delivery, not copyright clearance.
