Run the encoder inside a GNU screen session on your EC2 Linux instance. You can then detach or lose the SSH connection without ending the session, and reattach later to inspect it. This protects against SSH disconnections; it does not restart an encoder after a crash or an instance reboot.
Keep the encoder running after SSH ends
- Connect to the EC2 instance. Confirm the encoder is installed and its input file or other media source is available. This procedure is for an EC2 Linux host; exact package-install commands depend on the distribution, which the question does not specify.
- Start a persistent screen session before launching the encoder. Run
screen, then start your encoder inside that session. Configure it with the YouTube Live Control Room server URL and stream key. Ctrl-A, thenD. You can also let the SSH connection end. The encoder remains in the screen session, rather than depending on the SSH terminal staying open. - Reconnect and inspect the session. SSH back into the instance as the same user and run
screen -rto reattach to the retained session. Check the encoder’s output and whether it is still running. These are illustrative screen commands; the AWS guidance does not prescribe one command line for every Linux distribution or encoder. - Verify the YouTube stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview, stream health, and any messages. Configure and protect the YouTube stream
In Live Control Room, copy the live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Start sending content from the encoder, then confirm YouTube receives it. Treat the stream key as a password: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or log. Use settings appropriate to the video
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Test and monitor
Before the event, test with representative audio and motion, then watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room while live. What screen does—and does not—protect against
Screen separates the encoder process from the SSH terminal, so losing the client connection need not terminate the session. It is not a service supervisor or restart policy. The documented screen guidance does not establish recovery after an instance reboot, encoder crash, full disk, unavailable media input, or network failure. For those cases, diagnose the specific failure and arrange appropriate process supervision or recovery separately; no universal service configuration can be given without the operating system and encoder details.
If SSH drops because an idle client is disconnected, keepalive settings may help in some situations. AWS’s troubleshooting guidance describes a PuTTY keepalive setting, but keeping SSH open is not a substitute for running the encoder in a persistent server-side session.AWS EC2 connection troubleshooting

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or disappears
