Lady in the Lake is worth watching for its performances and its ambitious reworking of noir, but its dreamlike detours can make the central mystery harder to follow. The seven-part Apple TV limited series has more on its mind than a whodunit; whether its style deepens the story or obscures it is the dividing line.
What is Lady in the Lake about?
Set in Baltimore in 1966, the series begins with the disappearance of a young girl. The case draws together Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman), a Jewish housewife determined to remake herself as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while trying to support her family. Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s death.
Alma Har’el created and directed the limited series, adapted from Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel of the same name. Apple describes it as a seven-part drama and thriller. The first two episodes premiered July 19, 2024, with new episodes released Fridays through August 23, according to Apple’s schedule. Apple’s announcement gives the release details and adaptation credits; the Apple TV listing provides the series synopsis and episode descriptions.
What works: two leads who resist noir archetypes
The series’ strongest idea is its refusal to assign its women neat roles as heroine, victim, or femme fatale. TIME TV critic Judy Berman noted that both leads contain elements of those archetypes, while neither fully understands herself. That tension gives the dual-lead structure its purpose: Maddie and Cleo are not simply opposing symbols, and the story’s interest in their ambitions and blind spots makes their parallel lives more compelling than a conventional case-solving partnership.

In Berman’s assessment, Ingram gives Cleo vulnerability, intelligence, and grit. Portman’s Maddie is driven by the possibility of reinvention, but that drive does not erase the social pressures shaping her choices. The series brings race, class, sexism, and antisemitism into the same frame, using the women’s different positions in Baltimore to complicate who gets to pursue power, safety, or a public voice. These are critical readings of the show’s aims, not a claim that every strand is equally developed.
Berman’s concise verdict on its mood is apt: “There’s nothing cozy about Lady in the Lake.” The show treats noir less as a comforting puzzle than as a way to expose how danger and status operate around its characters. Berman’s July 19, 2024 TIME review praises the ambition while questioning how clearly the storytelling carries it.

Where it falls short: style can blur the mystery
Har’el’s formal choices give the series a dreamlike, symbolic texture, but that texture sometimes competes with the investigative thread. Ambiguity can make a scene resonate beyond its plot function; when dream connections feel too tidy or later surreal passages accumulate, they can instead make the mystery feel less legible. Berman argues that some plot holes are “covered in gauze rather than filled”—her critical judgment on the gap between striking imagery and coherent explanation.
That is the show’s central trade-off. Its period-noir atmosphere and visual experimentation are not decoration alone: they reflect characters’ unstable perceptions and the pressures surrounding them. Yet when a viewer needs to track what happened, what is imagined, and what a revelation changes, the same approach can withhold more clarity than it earns. Rotten Tomatoes’ published critics consensus captures a similar tension, calling the season “Dense with intriguing drama if too muddled by digressions and stylistic flourishes, Lady in the Lake is a well-acted mystery with a lot on its mind.” Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 1 page presents that consensus.

Is Lady in the Lake worth watching?
Yes, if character complexity, strong performances, and formally adventurous crime drama matter more to you than a tightly plotted mystery. Ingram’s Cleo and Portman’s Maddie anchor a story that wants to challenge familiar noir roles and examine intersecting forms of power. If your priority is a cleanly paced investigation with every symbolic thread resolved, the series may frustrate you. The division is not simply between viewers who like style and those who do not; it is whether the style’s ideas compensate for the moments when the case becomes harder to follow.
