Yes—LaRoy, Texas is an entertaining choice for viewers who want the hapless schemes, absurd criminal tangles and darkly comic violence associated with Fargo. But Shane Atkinson’s feature debut is a tonal cousin, not a Coen brothers replica: its unpredictable farce and eccentric performances are more immediately persuasive than its late-developing emotional depth.
What is LaRoy, Texas about?
Ray Jepsen (John Magaro), a depressed co-owner of a small-town hardware store, is mistaken for a low-rent hitman. He accepts a job, setting off a chain of dangers that draws the real killer, Harry (Dylan Baker), into the picture. Ray’s friend Skip (Steve Zahn), a private investigator, is part of the oddball orbit around the ensuing trouble. The 2023 Tribeca premiere listing describes the film as a comedy/thriller; Adastra Films lists it as a comedy. Adastra Films’ film page and the Tribeca Festival archive offer those differing descriptions.
Is it like Fargo?
In its broad ingredients, yes: ordinary, hapless people get caught in criminal schemes that become increasingly ridiculous and dangerous. RogerEbert.com critic Robert Daniels points to the “silly violence” as a Fargo-like pleasure, while Phil Hoad of The Guardian calls it “a Coen-esque crime farce.” That is a useful expectation-setter for the film’s mix of menace and absurdity, not a promise of the Coens’ exact rhythms or sensibility.
Atkinson’s film also plays with familiar noir machinery rather than simply following a straight crime-thriller line. Hoad describes its structure as hyperactive, with the usual noir suspects rearranged for comic effect. The pleasure is in watching misunderstandings and left turns keep changing the shape of Ray’s predicament; the trade-off is that the shifts between comedy, violence and melancholy may feel uneven to viewers who want a more controlled tonal line.

What works—and what may not
The crime farce keeps moving
The mistaken-identity premise gives the plot a strong comic engine, and the wild turns help keep the story unpredictable. Tribeca’s festival notes single out the eccentric characters, memorable performances and twists. The performances are a particular draw: Magaro anchors the story in Ray’s misfortune, Zahn gives Skip an offbeat presence, and Baker makes a strong impression as Harry.
The emotional payoff has a timing problem
The film eventually gives Ray and Skip’s friendship a bittersweet emotional note, as Daniels observes in his RogerEbert.com review. But Hoad’s Guardian review raises a meaningful reservation: character development arrives late, leaving Baker’s scene-stealing work somewhat isolated. That timing can make the closing emotional register feel more affecting for some viewers than fully earned for others.

Release date and where to watch
LaRoy, Texas premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2023; film and storefront listings also identify it as a 2024 release. These refer to different release contexts, not necessarily a contradiction. Runtime listings differ too: Adastra gives 112 minutes, while Tribeca’s archive gives 110, so “about 110 minutes” is the safest description.
Availability depends on territory and can change. Apple TV’s listing is for Ireland, so it does not establish availability elsewhere. Check your local storefront or a current regional listing before renting or buying.
