Kurup is a polished Malayalam crime drama built around the audacious reputation of fugitive Sukumara Kurup. Its star-led, stylized approach gives the story thriller momentum, but its treatment of the murder and the people caught up in it is less substantial. The result is an engaging portrait of criminal mythmaking that can feel slippery about the human cost beneath the legend.
What is Kurup about?
Directed by Srinath Rajendran and led by Dulquer Salmaan, Kurup is a 2021 Malayalam crime drama inspired by the case of Sukumara Kurup. The principal cast also includes Sobhita Dhulipala, Indrajith Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko and Sunny Wayne. The film follows Kurup’s life as a fugitive and the efforts to pursue him, shaping a real case into a stylized crime thriller rather than a procedural account.
That distinction matters. The film’s opening disclaimer, as summarized by the independent CBFC Watch archive, says it is inspired by incidents in the public domain and states: “It is not a documentary.” The disclaimer is a useful guide to how viewers should approach the story: as dramatization, not a definitive reconstruction of events.
Does the film do justice to the real case?
The film takes its central crime from the 1984 murder of Chacko. The Indian Express review describes the victim’s body being used in an attempt to fake Kurup’s death and claim insurance, and reports that accomplices were arrested while Kurup was never found. Those details are reported here as the review’s account; the film itself should not be treated as a substitute for case records.

Kurup is most assured when it evokes the scale and mystique of its central fugitive. Its polished style helps turn evasion into spectacle, and Dulquer Salmaan’s star presence supports that focus. But the same emphasis on Kurup’s image leaves less room for the consequences of the crime. In Manoj Kumar R’s Indian Express review, updated November 14, 2021, the central criticism is that the film moves too quickly past the murder and investigation, underdevelops the investigating officer and misses the human toll. That critique captures the film’s main imbalance: the criminal’s legend is more vivid than the lives and investigative work surrounding it.
How do the performances and pacing work?
The film’s appeal depends heavily on its lead performance and presentation. The Times of India review by Deepa Soman, published November 12, 2021, praised the performances and rated the film 3.5 out of 5. That more favorable response helps explain why viewers drawn to a star-led, atmospheric crime story may find Kurup effective even if its historical and investigative dimensions feel thin.

The Indian Express review rated it 2.5 out of 5, pointing to the swift passage through the murder and investigation. Together, the two reviews suggest a divide in emphasis rather than a settled consensus: the performances and stylized approach earned praise, while the handling of the case’s substance drew criticism.
Is Kurup worth watching?
It is worth watching if you want a sleek, performance-led crime drama about a fugitive’s public myth and can accept that the film gives that myth more attention than the investigation or victims’ experience. It is a less satisfying choice if you want a careful account of the case, an investigative procedural, or a deep exploration of the people harmed by the crime.
