La Maison is a strong pick for Succession fans drawn to family dynasties fighting over a valuable business—but it is a French-language drama about couture, not a remake of a media-family saga. Its 10 episodes follow a fashion house caught in scandal and threatened by a rival luxury group’s acquisition bid. The overlap is the power struggle; the setting, industry, and creative influences are distinct.
What La Maison is about
Apple describes La Maison as a contemporary family drama set in a French fashion house. The fictional, century-old Maison LEDU faces public scandal and a threatened acquisition by luxury group Rovel. Designer Vincent Ledu’s former muse, Perle Foster, joins next-generation designer Paloma Castel in trying to renew the house, while Rovel CEO Diane Rovel pursues the acquisition for business and revenge.
The stakes are control of a family-linked enterprise, but the enterprise is haute couture rather than a media company. Ledu is fictional, created for the series—not a real couture house or a factual account of a named luxury brand.
Where the Succession comparison works—and where it stops
Both series put wealthy families and corporate factions in conflict over an empire. La Maison also has a hostile takeover threat, giving viewers familiar with boardroom maneuvering and dynastic rivalries an obvious point of entry. But that is a premise-level resemblance, not a promise of matching tone, pace, or story.

Audrey Fournier’s September 20, 2024 Le Monde review calls the resemblance “assez superficielle” (“rather superficial”), while recognizing the shared ingredients of ultra-rich characters, family rivalries, and takeover battles. Co-creator José Caltagirone described those ingredients as durable dramatic devices: “Ce sont des ressorts dramatiques qui fonctionnent depuis la tragédie grecque.” The comparison is useful for explaining the kind of conflict, but it should not be mistaken for a claim that the shows tell the same story.
The creators point to The Crown, too
Co-creator and showrunner Valentine Milville gave a more specific account of the show’s influences in a September 15, 2024 Le Monde feature: “On a pensé à Succession, bien sûr, mais plus encore à The Crown, tant les familles aux manettes du luxe sont un peu, en France, nos lignées royales.” In other words, the creative team considered Succession, but saw The Crown as an even greater reference because French luxury families can resemble royal lineages. That framing helps explain why the fashion-house dynasty is central, rather than simply a new industry backdrop for the same corporate drama.

Episodes, release, and language options
La Maison is a 10-episode series that premiered globally on Apple TV+ on September 20, 2024, with its first two episodes; further episodes arrived weekly on Fridays through November 15, 2024. That schedule is historical, not an upcoming release. Apple’s official series page lists the show as TV-14. Apple’s US catalog lists French (France) as the original audio and includes English audio and English subtitles. Catalog options can differ by region, so check the listing where you watch.
Apple TV 4K is one way to watch on a television, not a requirement. Apple identifies the Apple TV app and a range of supported screens as viewing routes; the series is not limited to that hardware.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Try it if: your favorite part of Succession is watching powerful families and rival factions maneuver over a business.
- Adjust your expectations if: you want the same media-industry setting or assume the comparison guarantees identical tone and pacing. La Maison centers on couture and luxury, and the creators also cite The Crown as an influence.
- Check before starting if: you need a particular dub or subtitle track. The US catalog lists English audio and subtitles, but availability may vary by region.
Apple’s series announcement and release details are in its 2023 announcement and 2024 trailer and schedule announcement. See Apple’s official series page and US catalog listing for current program details. The comparison and creative influences are discussed in Audrey Fournier’s September 20 review and Le Monde’s September 15 feature.
