Rumi’s secret is that she is half demon. The ending does not make her markings disappear; instead, she stops treating that part of herself as something that must be erased. HUNTR/X defeats the immediate threat and returns to its fans, while Netflix has confirmed a sequel without revealing its plot or release date.
What is Rumi’s secret?
Rumi is half demon, and the markings she hides are a visible sign of that identity. She fears that the truth could undermine her place as a demon hunter and as a member of HUNTR/X. She also believes that a golden Honmoon—the barrier between the human and demon worlds—will make the markings vanish.
That secret is central to the film, not a late twist detached from the story. In Netflix’s oral history of “Golden,” the filmmakers explain that the song was designed to introduce the personal struggles of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey while revealing Rumi’s half-demon identity. Its difficult high note also becomes a point of tension in the plot.
How does KPop Demon Hunters end?
HUNTR/X’s music and its bond with fans help empower the Honmoon, the barrier protecting the human world from demons. Rumi initially sees the golden Honmoon as a way to remove her markings. But as the plan to seal the Honmoon and eliminate all demons comes into focus, she recognizes that destroying an entire category of beings is wrong.

In Netflix’s official ending explainer, the climax has Rumi destroy the Honmoon and return Jinu’s soul. She stops hiding her patterns, and HUNTR/X defeats the Saja Boys and saves its fans. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey then choose to return to those fans rather than take the break they had planned.
What does the Honmoon mean for Rumi’s story?
The Honmoon is both the film’s supernatural barrier and the mechanism around which Rumi’s hope of changing herself is built. The golden version seems to promise a cure: if Rumi can help create it, perhaps the part of her she fears will disappear. The resolution overturns that expectation. The answer is not to seal away every demon—or to erase Rumi’s demon side—but to reject shame and choose connection.

That thematic reading follows the events of the film and the filmmakers’ account of the song, rather than establishing a rule about what future stories must do. As co-director and writer Chris Appelhans put it in Netflix’s oral history, “Golden,” as the song meant to create the Golden Honmoon, is both “the plot goal of the movie and a vessel for the girls’ personal and emotional goals.”
Is the ending a sequel cliffhanger?
Not in the sense of leaving the film’s immediate conflict unresolved. HUNTR/X wins the fight, saves its fans, and returns to them; Rumi’s central choice is also made. The ending gives the first film an emotional resolution rather than announcing a specific next adventure.

There is, however, more story planned for the franchise. Netflix has officially announced a sequel, with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. The announcement does not disclose a release date or plot. Kang said, “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.” What that means for Jinu, the Saja Boys, or any other characters remains unknown.
