Julia Stiles adapted Renée Carlino’s bestselling romance novel Wish You Were Here by selecting what could carry into a film and reshaping what needed to change. Stiles and Carlino co-wrote the screenplay, and Stiles has described preserving the novel’s spirit, poetic reflections, and particular dialogue while distilling its material for her feature directorial debut.
What changed—and what the interviews establish
Stiles has acknowledged that the film departs from the book, but she has not offered a scene-by-scene inventory of those changes in the interviews covered here. The clearest account is one of adaptation as selection: deciding what to preserve and what to shift for the needs of a film. As she told UPI, “There was a lot to mine from the book and preserve from the book, but then there was a lot that we needed to shift.”
In a separate interview with Moviefone, Stiles described the challenge more briefly: “I had to distill it for a film.” That points to compression and reshaping as part of the process, but the available accounts do not identify particular plotlines or scenes that were cut or rewritten. It would be misleading to treat the examples Stiles has discussed as a complete list of differences.
How Renée Carlino helped shape the adaptation
Carlino participated in the screenplay. Swooon, published by TV Insider, reported that Carlino had written a screenplay before Stiles took a pass at it. Stiles described Carlino as trusting and generous, saying the movie eventually took on a life of its own. “She said you have to make it your own, and I’m grateful to her for that,” Stiles said.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That permission mattered to the balance Stiles describes: the film could be its own work without abandoning the source. She returned to the novel as a template and aimed to retain its spirit, including its poetic reflections on love, life, and death.
Dialogue and moments Stiles says she kept
Stiles told Swooon/TV Insider that she retained much of Carlino’s dialogue. She singled out Seth’s line about having more than one soulmate, and said the first night Charlotte and Adam spend together stays close to the book—nearly word-for-word. These are specific examples of continuity within an adaptation that also required changes.

Stiles also named her favorite line from the film: “I hope you know how lucky you are.” It comes in Adam’s letter to Seth near the end. Her attention to individual lines and moments reflects her effort to carry the novel’s emotional texture into a different medium.

Isabelle Fuhrman plays Charlotte and Mena Massoud plays Adam. In discussing the casting, Stiles pointed to Fuhrman’s performance and stamina as reasons she wanted her for the role. The adaptation’s emotional core therefore depends not only on words carried over from the page, but also on how the actors embody the characters on screen.
