KISS began with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Criss and Frehley later left, the original four reunited in 1996, and the band continued with other musicians in their roles. Frehley died in October 2025, aged 74. KISS retired from touring after its 2023 Madison Square Garden concert, according to the Associated Press; that account described the band’s touring plans at the time, not a guarantee against any later appearance.
Who were the original members of KISS?
The founding quartet was Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Stanley and Simmons were collaborating with Criss in New York before Frehley joined and completed the lineup. Their stage personas were Starchild (Stanley), the Demon (Simmons), Catman (Criss) and Spaceman, also known as Space Ace (Frehley). The Hollywood Walk of Fame identifies the original lineup period as 1973–80.
- Paul Stanley: vocals and guitar; Starchild.
- Gene Simmons: vocals and bass; the Demon.
- Peter Criss: drums and vocals; Catman.
- Ace Frehley: guitar; Spaceman or Space Ace.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted KISS in its Performer category in 2014 and names these four members on its profile. The induction did not include a performance by the original quartet: the Associated Press reported that a dispute over which members would be inducted kept them from performing together at the ceremony.
How did KISS become successful?
KISS’s early studio albums did not establish the band commercially. The breakthrough came with the 1975 live album Alive!, according to the Associated Press. The band’s theatrical personas and dramatic presentation were part of its identity, but its songs also relied on melodic, concise rock writing.

Tom Morello, writing for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, described that mix: “KISS combined the blues-glam swagger of New York Dolls and Alice Cooper’s b-movie theatricality with the Beatles’ melodic and pop chops. Better yet, they proved that rock & roll could be both well-crafted and shameless, exuberant fun.”
“Beth,” written and performed by Criss, became KISS’s highest-charting single. Criss’s official biography says it reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100; the page does not specify the year of that chart peak.

Why did Peter Criss and Ace Frehley leave KISS?
Peter Criss
Criss left KISS in 1980, according to his official biography. The Hollywood Walk of Fame’s summary places him and Frehley outside the band by 1982, but the changes did not happen as one simultaneous departure. Criss later returned for the original lineup’s 1996 reunion, then left again. Eric Singer subsequently took the drummer position associated with Criss.
Ace Frehley
Frehley left in 1982, returned in the mid-1990s for the reunion, and left again in 2002, according to his official biography and the Associated Press. He also made occasional appearances with KISS later. Tommy Thayer took the guitarist position associated with Frehley in the later lineup.

The available high-level accounts establish these broad changes rather than a complete year-by-year roster. Singer and Thayer were later KISS members; they are not among the four members named on the Rock Hall’s 2014 induction profile.
What happened when the original members reunited?
The original quartet reunited in 1996, bringing back the founding lineup after years of changes. That reunion did not make the lineup permanent: Criss and Frehley later departed again, and Singer and Thayer filled the corresponding drummer and guitarist roles. The 2014 Hall of Fame induction recognized KISS but did not reunite the original four for a performance at the ceremony.

Where are the KISS bandmates now?
Ace Frehley
Frehley died in October 2025 at age 74, the Associated Press reported. In a joint statement reported by AP, Simmons and Stanley said: “He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history. He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy.” AP described him as the first of KISS’s four founders to die.
Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons
In AP’s account, Stanley and Simmons were not planning to tour again after the band’s 2023 Madison Square Garden concert, which had been billed as KISS’s last. They remained open to the possibility of more concerts and continued promoting KISS music and memorabilia. This is a dated report of their stated plans, not proof that no subsequent appearance or plan occurred.

What does KISS’s recent business activity mean?
The band’s activity has extended beyond touring. The Associated Press reported that KISS sold its catalog, brand name and intellectual property to Pophouse Entertainment Group in 2024. AP estimated the deal’s value at more than $300 million; that was a reported estimate, not a disclosed confirmed purchase price.
