Can We Please Have Fun is Kings of Leon’s ninth studio album, released May 10, 2024. Its title captures the band’s stated desire to loosen up and enjoy making music—not a formal declaration of a career reboot. Recorded in Nashville with producer Kid Harpoon, the 12-track record pairs abrasive, propulsive rock with more spacious and melodic turns.

What the title means—and what it doesn’t

Universal Music Canada framed the album as the band “cutting loose, trying new things, and, yes, having some fun.” Caleb Followill described it as “the most enjoyable record I’ve ever been a part of.” Nathan Followill said, “It’s like we allowed ourselves to be musically vulnerable,” adding that he likes when a rock band accepts “that every song doesn’t have to be on 11.” These are the band’s own comments as quoted in the label’s release announcement.

That looseness gives the album its sense of a new beginning: not a claim that the group has abandoned its past, but a willingness to make room for different moods and approaches. The record’s rougher edges can recall the band’s earlier garage-rock charge, while quieter passages resist the idea that every song must push at full volume.

How the album sounds

Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy described the ninth album as having “a raw unpredictability” and a welcome return to the band’s “early sawdust-and-spilled-beer days.” That is Kennedy’s critical reading, rather than a universal verdict. He hears a punky, garage-leaning feel across much of the record, but also points to songs that pull away from that sound.

Grit and momentum

Tracks such as “Mustang” and “Nothing To Do” sit among the album’s more forceful moments. The band’s announcement identified “Mustang,” “Split Screen,” “Nothing To Do,” and “Nowhere To Run” as singles, giving listeners several entry points into the record’s mix of energy and contrast.

Space and contrast

Kennedy singles out “Actual Daydream” for its country-inflected indie quality and calls “Split Screen” a slow burn and the album’s brightest track. Those shifts in pace help explain the record’s central tension: it reaches toward the band’s rawer rock instincts without making every track a return to the same sound.

Recording and release details

Kings of Leon recorded Can We Please Have Fun at Dark Horse studio in Nashville and made it with producer Kid Harpoon, a new collaborator for the band. Universal Music Canada’s announcement says the band controlled the record’s creative elements, including its artwork and the unconventional visuals accompanying its songs.

The album was released May 10, 2024, through Capitol Records, according to Universal Music Canada. Apple Music lists LoveTap Records, LLC, under exclusive license to Capitol Records; its listing gives the album 12 tracks and a running time of 44 minutes. It is not the band’s newest album as of 2026.

Why the album feels like a reset

The case for hearing Can We Please Have Fun as a new beginning rests on the combination of intent and sound. The Followills describe a less pressured, more vulnerable approach; Kennedy hears a return to early grit; and the record’s slower and more melodic passages complicate any simple “back to basics” story. It is a loosening of expectations, rather than a documented break with the band’s history.
