King Charles’s cancer diagnosis was announced by Buckingham Palace on 5 February 2024, after a separate issue was found during a procedure for benign prostate enlargement. The Palace said the cancer was not prostate cancer and did not disclose its type. He paused public-facing duties while beginning treatment, but continued state business and official paperwork. A separate cancellation followed temporary treatment side effects in March 2025.
What the Palace said about the diagnosis
On 17 January 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that the King would undergo planned treatment for benign prostate enlargement. After the procedure, the Palace said on 29 January that he had been discharged and had rescheduled forthcoming public engagements to allow for private recuperation. The Palace’s 17 January announcement described the prostate condition as benign.
On 5 February, the Palace disclosed a separate finding. Its statement said: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.” Diagnostic tests had identified a form of cancer, which the Palace specified was not prostate cancer. Treatment began that day.
The Palace did not identify the cancer type, stage, prognosis, or treatment regimen in that announcement. The prostate procedure and the cancer finding were distinct; the available information does not establish further medical details.

Why public engagements were paused
Doctors advised the King to postpone public-facing duties during the initial treatment period. The Palace said he would continue state business and official paperwork “as usual.” The pause therefore applied to public appearances, not to all official work. Return to public duties in April 2024
On 26 April 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that the King would shortly return to public-facing duties following treatment and recuperation. This marked a return after the initial pause; it did not disclose his cancer type or provide a detailed prognosis. The Palace’s return announcement.
The March 2025 cancellation was a later event
On 27 March 2025, after scheduled treatment, the King experienced temporary side effects and spent a short period under hospital observation. ABC News reported that his planned appearances in Birmingham on 28 March were cancelled. Its report said the Palace did not identify the side effects or the cancer type. This was a later, discrete cancellation—not the initial 2024 pause in public-facing duties. ABC News’s 27 March 2025 report.
What later reporting did—and did not—say
In a report dated 12 December 2025, Woman & Home said a recorded Stand Up To Cancer message from the King indicated that he expected his treatment schedule to be reduced in the New Year. That report did not disclose his cancer type or a detailed prognosis, and a planned reduction in treatment is not evidence that treatment had ended or that he was cured. The King was quoted as saying, “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives.” Read Woman & Home’s report on the message.

The same report attributed to the King claims that at least nine million people in the country were not up to date with available cancer screenings, and that “the fifty per cent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives” should take the issue seriously.
