Killer Heat is a 2024 mystery thriller set on the Greek island of Crete. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Nick Bali, an American expatriate private investigator hired to look into the apparent accidental death of shipping heir Leo Vardakis. The film, directed by Philippe Lacôte, adapts Jo Nesbø’s short story “The Jealousy Man.”
What is Killer Heat about?
Nick Bali is asked to investigate Leo Vardakis’s death, officially described as an accident during a climb on Crete. Leo’s sister-in-law, Penelope, doubts that explanation and hires Nick to examine the circumstances. The case draws him into the wealthy Vardakis family’s world, where Leo’s relationship with his twin brother adds another layer of uncertainty.

The setup is a private-eye mystery rather than a documentary account: the film builds its story around a suspected crime, family tensions and the question of whether the death was truly accidental.

Is Killer Heat based on a book?
It adapts Jo Nesbø’s short story “The Jealousy Man.” The Guardian identifies that as the source story’s original title; the screen adaptation uses Killer Heat. The source is a short story, while the film presents the material as a feature-length mystery, so the movie is a screen interpretation rather than simply a filmed version of a novel.

How was Killer Heat received?
Rotten Tomatoes’ page snapshot accessed October 4, 2026, showed an 18% Tomatometer from 28 critic reviews and a 28% Popcornmeter from more than 250 ratings. These scores can change as reviews and audience ratings are added, and they describe the ratings recorded on that date—not an unchanging measure of the film.
One contemporary critical response was strongly negative: in a September 26, 2024 review, The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee called the film dull and predictable. That is one critic’s assessment, not a claim that every reviewer or viewer shared the same reaction.
