Kevin Costner introduced a new puppy on Instagram on February 1, 2024, calling the dog the “newest addition to the family” and saying, “I’m already in love with this special guy.” The original post showed three affectionate photographs, but it did not reveal the puppy’s name. Later reports referred to him as Bobby or Bob, and Costner continued sharing glimpses of the dog into April 2025.
Costner’s first photos left the puppy unnamed
Costner’s February 1, 2024, Instagram announcement featured a puppy appearing to run near the actor and his pickup truck, Costner holding and cuddling him, and the dog resting indoors with a dark tag or bone-shaped accessory around his neck. In the caption, Costner described the puppy as the “newest addition to the family” and added, “I’m already in love with this special guy.” Contemporary coverage of the announcement noted that Costner did not identify the dog by name.
Several entertainment and dog-news reports described the puppy as a white or yellow Labrador Retriever. That description appears to be based on the photographs and reporting, rather than a publicly documented breed record, so it is more accurate to say the dog appears to be or was reported as a Labrador. Costner did not publicly establish in the original announcement that the dog was a purebred Labrador.
The puppy was later identified as Bobby—or Bob
By June 2024, a PEOPLE-related report said the then-seven-month-old Labrador was named Bobby. Around Costner’s June appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, entertainment coverage used the shorter name Bob and included the puppy in the public conversation surrounding the actor. The careful summary is that the dog was later referred to publicly as Bobby or Bob, not that either name appeared in Costner’s original February post. Later coverage of Costner and the puppy provides that name update.

Bob’s playful appearances on Costner’s social media
The puppy quickly became part of Costner’s lighthearted social-media updates. Secondary reports described a Valentine’s Day 2024 Instagram Story in which the dog was resting on an open dishwasher. Costner joked that Bobby was “a big help with the dishes.” Because the original Story was reported through secondary coverage, the dishwasher anecdote should be understood as an attributed social-media moment rather than an independently verified event. The Valentine’s Day report described the exchange.
The latest clearly dated update located for this story came in April 2025. According to Parade’s report, Costner posted a video of Bob interrupting him while he worked on a laptop and carrying a food bowl. The appearance suggested that the dog remained a recurring part of Costner’s online family updates more than a year after the original puppy announcement.

Preparing for a puppy of your own
If Costner’s puppy photos have you thinking about welcoming a dog, the practical starting point is less glamorous but more important: prepare the home before the puppy arrives. The American Kennel Club’s new-puppy checklist identifies basics such as a crate, collar, leash or harness, food and water bowls, toys, gates, and house-training supplies.

- House-training supplies: Some owners keep puppy training pads available, particularly during the early days or when outdoor access is limited. Pads are a management tool, not a substitute for a consistent training plan.
- Training help: A puppy training book or qualified local trainer can help owners establish routines for crate training, leash walking, socialization, and basic cues.
The AKC’s beginner’s guide to crate training is a useful starting point for owners who want to introduce a crate carefully and positively. None of these supplies or resources has been identified as something Costner used; they are general preparation suggestions for readers considering puppy ownership.
