What did Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner agree to?
Their joint statement, released by Costner’s publicist in September 2023, said they had reached “an amicable and mutually agreed upon resolution of all issues pertaining to their divorce proceedings.” The announcement ended the prospect of a December trial; the couple had already litigated child support. How the reported child-support figures differ
The amounts reported during the case refer to different points in the court process. Baumgartner’s request, a July tentative ruling, and a September order should not be confused with one another—or treated as the couple’s full divorce settlement.

What the legal expert said—and when
In a July 12, 2023 Fox News Digital report, celebrity lawyer Christopher C. Melcher commented on the tentative ruling setting interim support at $129,755 per month. He described it as “another defeat for Christine,” while adding that “no one should be complaining about getting $129,755 per month in child support.” (Fox News Digital report reproduced as a PDF)
That was Melcher’s characterization of the July tentative ruling, not a court finding or a comment on the terms of the September settlement. The later figure reported by AP followed a hearing and was about $63,000 per month.

Divorce timeline and custody
Baumgartner filed for divorce in May 2023. Both parties sought joint custody of their three children, according to the Los Angeles Times. The court fight also involved child support and the family home, including a dispute connected to the prenup. (Los Angeles Times)
