The trial established the verdict, but not an uncontested explanation of her private motive.
What happened between Ashley and Doug Benefield?
On September 27, 2020, Ashley Benefield shot Doug at her home in the Bradenton, Florida, area. The couple had separated and were involved in a custody dispute. The case later became known as the “Black Swan” trial, a reference to Ashley’s past as a ballerina. The Bradenton Herald reported the shooting and its location.
The central question at trial was whether Ashley used deadly force to protect herself from an imminent attack, as she said, or whether the shooting was unjustified, as prosecutors argued. Those competing accounts matter: her testimony was not itself a jury finding, and the prosecution’s proposed motive was not a finding that the jury expressly made.
What did Ashley Benefield say happened?
Testifying in her own defense, Ashley said the couple was packing for a move when Doug became agitated. She said he pushed a box into her, hit her as she tried to leave, and then advanced after she raised a handgun. “I was scared to death. I thought he was gonna kill me,” she testified. Her position was that she fired in self-defense. CBS News covered her testimony and the trial accounts.

The defense also presented testimony about the relationship. Trauma counselor Jason Quintal described Doug as domineering and at times controlling. Domestic-violence expert Bruce Ferris said Ashley’s behavior was consistent with having experienced abuse and discussed appeasement as a way to avoid aggression. Those were witness opinions and testimony; they should not be treated as a court finding that every alleged incident occurred.
Why did prosecutors challenge her account?
Prosecutors argued that the medical evidence did not fit Ashley’s description of Doug lunging toward her. They focused on the location of the fatal chest wound and argued that it was consistent with Doug turning away rather than advancing. That was the prosecution’s interpretation of the evidence; the wound’s location alone does not establish precisely how he was moving.

The prosecution also argued that Ashley wanted sole custody of the couple’s daughter and that the custody dispute supplied a motive. The defense countered that she had repeatedly sought protection from authorities and that those efforts had failed. These were opposing trial arguments, not a definitive account of her private motive established by the verdict. The Guardian’s sentencing report summarized the prosecution’s theory.
What did the court and jury decide?
Pretrial self-defense immunity ruling
In July 2023, Judge Matt Whyte denied Ashley’s request for court-ordered immunity after a Stand Your Ground hearing. The judge concluded that the evidence showed she was not justified in using deadly force on September 27, 2020. This was a pretrial ruling on immunity, separate from the later jury verdict. Jury verdict
On July 30, 2024, a six-person jury found Ashley guilty of manslaughter, a lesser-included offense than the second-degree murder charge. The jurors deliberated for nearly seven hours. The verdict means she was convicted of manslaughter; it does not mean jurors declared that the prosecution’s custody-motive theory was the reason she shot Doug. The Associated Press reported the verdict and deliberations.
Sentence and announced appeal
On December 3, 2024, Judge Whyte sentenced Ashley to 20 years in prison. He rejected defense requests for a new trial based on juror-misconduct allegations. Her attorney said he would appeal, but the reporting cited here does not establish whether an appeal was later filed or how it was resolved. The AP reported the sentence and the attorney’s stated intention to appeal.

So, why did Ashley Benefield shoot her husband?
The answer depends on whether the question is about what she claimed, what the state argued, or what the jury decided. Ashley said she feared an imminent attack and acted to save herself. Prosecutors said her account conflicted with the physical evidence and argued that the custody dispute was part of her motive. The jury rejected a complete acquittal and convicted her of manslaughter, but the verdict did not settle every disputed detail or identify a specific motive.
