He hired a special-effects makeup artist, wore a prosthetic disguise and tested it at The Grove, a busy outdoor shopping center in Los Angeles. Nobody recognized him—but the experience made him miss being famous.
What disguise did Kevin Bacon wear?
Bacon said a hat and glasses would only change his appearance so much because, as he put it, “I have a face that’s pretty recognizable.” Instead, he consulted a special-effects makeup artist and commissioned a prosthetic disguise.

Did anyone recognize Kevin Bacon?
No. Bacon said, “Nobody recognized me.” The disguise apparently worked well enough for him to experience the setting as an anonymous shopper.
Why did Kevin Bacon say “This sucks”?
Anonymity brought ordinary inconveniences he was not used to. He said people pushed past him, nobody told him they loved him, and he had to wait in line to buy coffee. His reaction was deliberately humorous: “I was like, This sucks. I want to go back to being famous.”

The comment was Bacon’s personal, joking response—not the result of a formal social experiment. The accounts do not establish that the outing was filmed or connected to the production of a movie.

Bacon’s anecdote captures an unusual trade-off. Celebrity attention can be intrusive, but it can also bring friendliness, deference and instant recognition. When the prosthetic disguise removed those benefits, routine public behavior—standing in line, navigating a crowd and being overlooked—felt strikingly different to him.
Rank #3
The episode is a single personal story, not evidence that anonymous people are generally treated poorly or that fame is preferable in every situation. Its point is the contrast Bacon experienced during one visit to The Grove.
