Who designed Melania Trump’s black-and-white inaugural gown?
Hervé Pierre designed the gown specifically for Melania Trump. Pierre said the black-and-white combination was “true to her own style and vision,” according to contemporary coverage by Good Morning America published January 21, 2025.
The Smithsonian’s collection record identifies the principal fabric as off-white silk crepe. The dress has a slit skirt and two bands of black silk gazar trim, a crisp, structured silk traditionally used for formal eveningwear.
What did Melania Trump wear to the 2025 inaugural balls?
The look consisted of four documented elements:
- Gown: A strapless, off-white silk-crepe gown with a slit skirt.
- Trim: Two bands of black silk gazar, creating the graphic black-and-white contrast.

What style is the black-and-white gown?
In fashion terms, it is a strapless formal evening gown in a monochrome palette: an off-white silk-crepe base, black architectural trim and a slit skirt. The silhouette is neither a jacketed ball gown nor an off-shoulder dress; its defining line is the bare, straight-across neckline. The black gazar bands and bodice “Z” supply the graphic structure usually associated with modern couture.
“Black-and-white formal evening gown” is a useful description for a similar style, but commercially available dresses using that phrase are only style analogues. They are not the original custom Pierre gown.

What does the black Z on the dress mean?
Melania Trump described the black shape as a personal symbol rather than a publicly defined political emblem. At the Smithsonian presentation, she said the meticulously formed black shape “Z” on the front bodice “summons decades of my early memories, life experiences, and influences.”
She also characterized the dress as having “a distinct point of view—a modern silhouette, bold and dignified, and ruthlessly chic.” Her remarks connect the motif to her own biography and aesthetic influences, but do not assign it a single literal meaning beyond that personal interpretation.

Where is the 2025 inaugural gown now?
On February 20, 2026, Trump presented the gown and neckpiece to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s First Ladies Collection. The ensemble was subsequently placed on display, according to Associated Press coverage and the White House.
The White House described the donation as the first time a non-consecutive First Lady had donated an inaugural gown for a second time. It also made Trump only the second First Lady in history to have two inaugural-ball gowns represented in the collection. The Smithsonian record covers the garment, while the White House account also identifies the accompanying choker and brooch reproduction.
