Kelly Monaco’s run on General Hospital ended in 2024 after about 21 years as Sam McCall. The departure was reported in August; Sam’s story concluded on screen later that fall. Monaco said the decision still did not make sense to her, but no official explanation from ABC or the show’s producers is established in the cited reporting.
Why did Kelly Monaco leave General Hospital?
The reason for the production decision has not been publicly established in the cited reports. August 2024 coverage said Monaco was leaving and that Sam was expected to be killed off, citing sources rather than an on-record explanation from ABC or the producers. Soap Opera Network and TVLine reported the departure, but neither provides an official motive. Claims about pay, disputes, or story plans should not be treated as confirmed explanations.
What did Kelly Monaco say about leaving?
TVLine reported on October 6, 2024, that Monaco posted the caption “Last scene with the Davis girls,” followed by “Still doesn’t make any sense to me.” The comment conveys her reaction, but it does not explain the production’s decision. TVLine’s report attributes the words to her Instagram caption.
When did she join the show, and when did Sam’s story end?
TVLine dates Monaco’s first appearance as Sam McCall to October 1, 2003. That makes the description “after 21 years” a rounded account of her tenure when the exit unfolded in 2024. Before joining General Hospital, Monaco played Livvie Locke on its spinoff, Port Charles. TVLine gives the debut date and background.

The news of Monaco’s departure came on August 26–27, 2024. Sam’s exit was later shown in the storyline: ABC7 Los Angeles reported that she flat-lined during the week, and that her final scenes with Dante, played by Dominic Zamprogna, aired Friday, November 1. Zamprogna told ABC7, “We’re family. I’m going to miss her.” ABC7’s November 1 coverage reports the on-screen farewell and his comment.
How to understand the departure reports
- August 2024: Reports announced Monaco’s departure and said Sam was expected to be killed off, based on sources.
- October 6, 2024: Monaco’s reported Instagram caption expressed confusion about the decision.
- Late October to November 1, 2024: Sam’s story reached its on-screen conclusion, with final scenes alongside Dante airing November 1.
Keeping those stages distinct matters: the August reports described a production choice before viewers saw Sam’s exit, while the November report covered what happened in the story. Neither supplies an official explanation for why the show ended Monaco’s run.
