Kelly Clarkson’s Ex-Husband Left Her Ranch for a Smaller—but Still Lavish—Montana Property

After leaving Kelly Clarkson’s approximately $17.75 million Montana ranch in 2022, Brandon Blackstock moved to a substantial 40-acre Butte-area lodge reported with a $1.8 million listing price. The property was listed for $2.9 million in 2026, but the “downgrade” label needs context: it was a large luxury ranch compound, not a modest home.

After leaving Kelly Clarkson’s approximately $17.75 million Montana ranch in 2022, Brandon Blackstock moved to a separate Butte-area property that was reported at a $1.8 million listing price. That difference explains the “downgrade” framing—but the replacement was not a modest home. It was a substantial 40-acre Montana compound with a lodge-style residence, indoor pool, spa room, equestrian facilities, and multiple workshops.

The property was later listed for $2.9 million in 2026, about a year after Blackstock’s death. That figure is an asking price, not a confirmed sale price or appraisal.

Why Blackstock left Clarkson’s Montana ranch

Clarkson filed for divorce in June 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple’s Montana property became one of the most contested issues in the divorce proceedings.

In October 2021, a judge ruled that the ranch belonged to Clarkson under the couple’s prenuptial agreement. Later divorce reporting valued the property at approximately $17.75 million. Blackstock continued to argue that he needed the ranch for his plans to work in ranching, but the ownership decision gave Clarkson control of most of the property.

A January 2022 report from Us Weekly said Blackstock received a 5.12% interest calculated against the reported $17.75 million value. The divorce settlement, finalized on March 8, 2022, allowed him to remain at the ranch temporarily while paying monthly rent.

That arrangement was not permanent. Under the settlement, Blackstock had to leave, and he moved out on June 1, 2022.

Where did Brandon Blackstock move?

According to a deed transfer obtained by Us Weekly, Blackstock purchased a home in the Butte, Montana, area on April 18, 2022. The report associated the property with a $1.8 million listing price, but said the final purchase price was not publicly known.

That distinction matters: it is not accurate to say Blackstock definitely bought the property for $1.8 million. The defensible description is that the home was reported with a $1.8 million listing price in 2022.

A large ranch compound, not a modest downsizing

The financial contrast with Clarkson’s former ranch is dramatic, but Blackstock’s new property was still an expansive and highly equipped rural estate.

Realtor.com’s 2026 report described the Butte-area property as a roughly 40-acre homestead with a lodge-style home measuring more than 6,400 square feet. The listing summary gave one bedroom count, while its detailed description referred to additional bedrooms across the main and lower levels. Because those figures do not match within the report, the safest description is that the home had more than 6,400 square feet and multiple bedrooms.

Reported features included:

  • An indoor pool and spa room
  • A chef’s kitchen
  • A large great room
  • A steam room
  • A horse barn of approximately 3,800 square feet
  • Eight horse stalls, a tack room, and a hay loft
  • A heated workshop and separate car shop
  • Three water wells
  • Snow-melt sidewalks
  • A paved driveway

In other words, the move represented a reduction from the value and scale of the Clarkson-linked ranch, but not a move into an ordinary suburban or utilitarian house. The property was designed for both residential comfort and livestock or equestrian use.

What happened to the property after Blackstock’s death?

The Associated Press reported that Blackstock died on August 7, 2025, at age 48, after battling cancer for more than three years. Later reporting connected the Butte-area property with his partner, Brittney Marie Jones, and described their involvement in livestock-auction and rodeo-related ventures.

Those details come from obituary and media reporting and should be distinguished from independently verified corporate ownership records. Montana Department of Livestock records were also reported as showing a business-license connection to the property, while media reports described Blackstock’s ranching business as having been renamed V Bar V Cattle Co.

In July 2026, Realtor.com reported that the property had been put on the market for $2.9 million. The listing was reportedly associated with Blackstock’s full legal name, Narvel Brandon Blackstock.

There is no evidence in the available reporting that the property had sold by the time of that report. Therefore, $2.9 million should be treated only as the seller’s asking price—not as the property’s final value.

How big was the financial “downgrade”?

Property Reported figure What the figure means
Clarkson-linked Montana ranch Approximately $17.75 million Reported value used in divorce coverage
Blackstock’s Butte-area property in 2022 $1.8 million Reported listing price; final purchase price was undisclosed
Butte-area property in 2026 $2.9 million Reported asking price; not a confirmed sale price

Using the reported figures, the later property’s 2022 listing price was roughly one-tenth of the value attributed to Clarkson’s former ranch. But the comparison is not a perfect appraisal-to-appraisal calculation: the ranch figure was reported as a property value, the $1.8 million number was a listing price, and the $2.9 million figure was a later asking price.

The move also reflected a change in Blackstock’s work

Before and during the marriage, Blackstock was known in entertainment-management circles and was associated with Clarkson professionally. Post-divorce reporting portrayed his Montana life as quieter and more focused on cattle ranching, livestock auctions, and rodeo-related work.

That shift helps explain why the replacement property’s barn, stalls, hay loft, wells, workshops, and acreage mattered. It was not simply a less expensive residence; it was a working rural property aligned with the direction his life reportedly took after the divorce.

What the divorce settlement did—and did not—establish

The ranch dispute was part of a broader divorce case involving property, occupancy, support, and the couple’s two children. Reporting said Clarkson sought to sell or regain control of the Montana property, while Blackstock maintained that he needed it for his ranching plans.

The settlement gave Clarkson ownership under the prenup-related ruling, permitted Blackstock to stay for a limited period while paying rent, and ultimately required him to move out. Us Weekly also reported substantial support obligations, including spousal support through January 2024 and child support. Those were terms reported in the 2022 divorce coverage and should not be presented as current obligations in 2026.

The accurate version of the “downgrade” story

Blackstock did move from a Montana ranch reported at approximately $17.75 million to a separate Butte-area property associated with a $1.8 million listing price. In purely financial terms, that was a major reduction from the property at the center of the divorce fight.

Calling the new home “modest,” however, would misrepresent it. The later property covered about 40 acres and included a large lodge, luxury amenities, and extensive ranch infrastructure. The most accurate summary is that Blackstock left Clarkson’s far more valuable ranch, established his own substantial rural compound, and was later associated with a $2.9 million asking price for that property in 2026.

The Bottom Line

Its reported $2.9 million 2026 listing price was an asking price, not proof of a completed sale.
