In Shekhar Home, Kay Kay Menon plays a Bengali detective shaped by Sherlock Holmes but not confined to him: the series relocates Holmes-like deduction to a small town in early-1990s India, before mobile phones and with limited forensic tools. In a 2024 interview, Menon said that freedom to make Shekhar eccentric and unpredictable was central to the role. He also reflected on Paanch, the film that circulated through screenings despite never receiving a theatrical release, and on why he sees streaming as a more individual medium for actors.
What is Shekhar Home?
Shekhar Home is a six-episode Hindi-language comedy and an official reimagining of Sherlock Holmes stories, according to Scroll’s Aug. 10, 2024 profile of Menon. The fictional detective Shekhar Home is Bengali, lives in the town of Lonpur, and is paired with Jayvrat, played by Ranvir Shorey. The series draws on Arthur Conan Doyle’s public-domain stories, but its premise is adaptation rather than a straightforward relocation of Holmes.
Creator and writer Aniruddha Guha said the team used Doyle’s original works as a base, repurposing plot lines, characters and setting. He described working with director Srijit Mukherji, co-writer Niharika Puri and the BBC creative team, and said the aim was an indigenous interpretation rather than a replication of the Benedict Cumberbatch-led Sherlock. Guha also said the series embraced parallels with Bengali detectives Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi. Those are the creator’s stated intentions, not a claim that the characters or stories are interchangeable. Bollywood Hungama’s September 2024 interview with Guha gives his account of the adaptation.
How the 1990s setting changes the detective story
The series places its cases in early-1990s Bengal, in a pre-cellphone era. That shifts deduction away from the instant searches, phone records and surveillance that modern crime stories often rely on. Guha said access to forensic and surveillance technology was limited in the setting, making the investigation more dependent on observation and physical inquiry.

Menon described that constraint as an acting and storytelling opportunity: “It’s the pre-cellphone era, so the detection becomes that much more interesting, more physical,” he said in the Scroll interview. The period detail is more than atmosphere: it determines what evidence the characters can obtain and how they can follow it.
Why Menon saw room to shape Shekhar
Menon did not approach the part as a simple imitation of Holmes. “What was interesting was the character of Shekhar Home, who is not Sherlock Holmes per se,” he said. He explained that the script gave him space to build quirks, eccentricities and unpredictability into the character. The distinction matters: Doyle’s detective provides a recognizable point of departure, while Menon’s performance is meant to make Shekhar a person with his own behavior and presence.

Scroll’s profile also names Shernaz Patel, Kaushik Sen, Rasika Dugal, Kirti Kulhari and Rudranil Ghosh among the cast. Its Aug. 10, 2024 publication described the series as due to premiere on JioCinema on Aug. 14, 2024. That is a release-time report; it does not establish where the series can be watched today or in every region.
Paanch: the film Menon called “most seen” and “most unreleased”
Menon’s other striking reflection in the interview concerned Paanch, Anurag Kashyap’s film in which he appeared in 2003. It encountered censor problems and did not receive a theatrical release, according to Scroll. Yet it reached audiences through festival screenings and private circulation. Menon captured that unusual afterlife with a line: “I call Paanch the most seen and the most unreleased film,” he observed.

The phrase describes a contradiction, not a release status that should be read literally: screenings and circulation gave the film viewers, but they did not amount to a theatrical release. Scroll’s 2024 reporting does not establish its current lawful availability or commercial distribution. The same profile notes that Menon appeared in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in 2003; that film was released in 2004.

Menon contrasted cinema’s collective audience experience with watching a series alone or with family at home. “Streaming requires actors – it’s an individual medium for the audience, unlike cinema,” he noted. He argued that actors must perform well for streaming work to hold viewers’ attention. That is his perspective on the medium, rather than a measured finding about the streaming industry as a whole.
