PEOPLE reported on January 24, 2024, that the Princess of Wales’s planned abdominal surgery had surprised some people in her wider circle of family friends and people who worked closely with the royal family. That was an account attributed to PEOPLE’s understanding of unnamed sources—not a statement from Kensington Palace or confirmation that every relative and staff member was unaware.
What the report said about the surprise
In its January 24, 2024 report, PEOPLE said there had been no indication within the broader circle of family friends that anything was wrong. It reported that the carefully guarded news came as a surprise even to people working closely with the royal family. The account relied on unnamed-source reporting, and it did not identify particular people who were surprised.
The distinction matters: “surprised those close to the royal family” describes the report’s sourcing, not an official Palace account of who knew about the operation. It also does not establish that the surgery itself was unplanned.
What Kensington Palace announced
Kensington Palace announced on January 17, 2024, that the Princess had undergone planned abdominal surgery and described the operation as successful. A contemporaneous Marie Claire UK report reproducing the Palace statement said the expected hospital stay was 10 to 14 days and that she was unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter. Those were expectations at the time of the announcement, not confirmation of how long she ultimately remained in hospital or when she returned to duties.

The Palace said, “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate.” It also said, “She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.” The statement added that it would “only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share.” These quotations are Kensington Palace’s words as reproduced in Marie Claire UK’s contemporaneous coverage, rather than a direct link to the original Palace statement.

The Palace disclosed that the surgery was abdominal, planned, and successful, but did not publicly specify the procedure in the contemporaneous coverage. Fox News also noted at the time that the type of surgery had not been disclosed. The announcement and recovery timetable do not establish a diagnosis or medical cause, so neither should be inferred.
