“Yes, it does. Actually, 100 per cent.” That was Kate Walsh’s answer when PerthNow asked on 3 February 2025 whether Perth was home. In the same interview, the actor described the moment she realized she was calling Perth home—and said playing client Hannah Halston in ABC comedy Optics was one of the most fun experiences of her career.
Why Kate Walsh calls Perth home
Walsh told PerthNow that the realization came while she was travelling overseas. She noticed she had started saying, “I’m going home,” and recognized what that meant. As she put it: “A couple of years ago (when I was travelling overseas) I started saying, ‘I’m going home’, (and it made me realise), ‘Oh, OK, this is home’. Home is where the heart is. Home is where the cats are.”

Her answer reflects what she said in that February 2025 interview; it is not a new statement about her circumstances today. Perth had been part of her life for several years by then. In a 2020 ABC Perth interview, Walsh said she had spent six months in Western Australia after arriving on holiday when the pandemic began. At the time, she was preparing for her Australian stage debut in The Other Place at Fremantle’s Victoria Hall. PerthNow’s 2025 interview and ABC Perth’s 2020 interview page provide those different snapshots of her connection to the city.
What Kate Walsh enjoyed about Optics
In Optics, Walsh plays Hannah Halston, a high-profile client whose crisis brings the staff of a public-relations firm into her orbit. PerthNow described Hannah as difficult and characterized her as a fictionalized riff on Walsh’s entrepreneurial background; that is the interview’s framing of the role, not a confirmed statement of the creators’ intent.

Walsh praised the series’ creators and stars, Vic Zerbst and Jenna Owen, and summed up the experience this way: “I literally don’t think I’ve ever had that much fun, except on stage.” She also predicted: “I think Optics is going to be an iconic Aussie workplace comedy.” Both comments were reported by PerthNow on 3 February 2025.
