Kathie Lee Gifford said she fractured her pelvis in two places after missing a step and falling on stairs while she was recovering from hip replacement surgery. She spent about a week in the hospital, then went home to continue physical therapy, according to her July 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight.
What happened to Kathie Lee Gifford?
In an exclusive interview published July 31, 2024, Entertainment Tonight reported that Gifford had fractured her pelvis in two places and had been hospitalized for about a week. She told interviewer Rachel Smith that she was hurrying down the stairs to reach a friend, missed a step and fell. Gifford also said she had overexerted herself while recovering from hip replacement surgery; these are details from her account, not a medical finding about what caused the fracture. “I’m doing well!” Gifford told Entertainment Tonight. Describing her discharge, she said: “I’m happy to be out of the hospital. As lovely as all those people are to me, they really took good care of me, but there’s no place like home.”
How was she recovering after leaving the hospital?
At the time of the July 31 report, Gifford was home and said she was doing physical therapy every day. She described the recovery timeline as uncertain and said she needed to follow her care team’s direction.

An August 13, 2024 follow-up said she had used a walker while moving around her Tennessee farm and described her recovery as unusually rapid.
