Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron to the UK on 8 July 2025, greeting the couple on behalf of King Charles III. The three-day state visit ran from 8 to 10 July; Charles and Queen Camilla led the formal welcome in Windsor later that day.
Who did William and Catherine welcome?
The visiting couple were French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. William and Catherine greeted them on the King’s behalf as they arrived in the UK. The King and Queen Camilla then welcomed the Macrons in Windsor, where the state visit formally began. The Royal Family’s account of the Windsor programme distinguishes the Waleses’ arrival greeting from the monarchs’ official welcome.
What happened during the Windsor welcome?
The day combined public ceremony, private engagements and a formal banquet. A carriage procession travelled through Windsor and along the Long Walk before the official arrival ceremony, which included national anthems and a Guard of Honour provided by Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards and F Company Scots Guards.
Charles and Camilla hosted a private lunch and showed the visitors objects connected with France from the Royal Collection. One item was an English glass believed to be the earliest champagne glass in existence. The Royal Family says champagne makers from Reims and Épernay, together with other artisans, gave it to King George V and Queen Mary in 1935.

The day concluded with a state banquet in St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle. In his speech, Charles described the visit as an occasion to celebrate the countries’ shared history and culture: “At this crucial point in our shared histories, your visit is another occasion to celebrate our deep and enduring friendship.” The Royal Family published the King’s banquet speech.
Why was the visit diplomatically significant?
The visit brought royal pageantry together with discussion of the UK-France relationship after Brexit. The Élysée called it the first state visit to the UK by a leader of an EU member state since Brexit, and noted that it followed Charles and Camilla’s state visit to France in September 2023. The Associated Press described it as the first state visit by a French head of state to Britain since Nicolas Sarkozy’s visit in 2008. These are distinct descriptions of the visit’s place in recent history. The Élysée overview gives the dates as 8–10 July 2025.

In an address to the UK Parliament on the first day, Macron discussed defence, climate and biodiversity, migration, trade and investment, and the post-Brexit relationship. He said: “The United Kingdom and France must once again show the world that our alliance can make all the difference.” His remarks also looked ahead to a UK-France summit and announced France’s intention to loan the Bayeux Tapestry to the UK in the run-up to the 1,000th anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth. The Élysée published Macron’s first-day address and visit account.
Macron also said that 3,500 French companies working in the UK “remain the second leading foreign employers in your country and vice versa.” This is a figure and characterization from his address, not an independently evaluated employment statistic.
