Short answer: Kast is free to start and can let friends watch Netflix together by sharing the host’s desktop browser or application. It is not a Netflix plug-in or Netflix-approved synchronization service. Kast also offers Kast TV, a separate cloud-streamed catalog with its own content and controls. Premium is advertised at $6.49 per month, or $4.99 per month when billed annually.
What Kast is today
Kast describes itself as a virtual living room for movie nights, gaming and online gatherings. A party can combine screen or application sharing with voice, video, text chat and reactions. You can create a private or public room, invite people and switch between watching, talking and sharing other desktop content.
Kast is available on the web through Chrome and Edge on desktop, as well as through Windows, Mac, iOS and Android apps. Availability on mobile does not guarantee that every hosting or screen-sharing feature works the same way as it does on a computer, so a desktop setup is the safest choice for hosting Netflix.
Kast’s current About page says that up to 20 people can share a screen or camera, while 100 additional people can join to watch: Kast About. Those figures are different from older descriptions that simply claim “100+” simultaneous sharers.

Can Kast stream Netflix?
Yes, potentially—but through screen sharing. The host opens Netflix separately in a browser or app, starts the film or episode, and shares that window or screen in Kast. Everyone then watches the host’s feed while the host operates Netflix.
No, Kast is not a native Netflix integration. It should not be described as a Netflix extension, Netflix-approved watch-party feature or guaranteed synchronization layer. Kast provides the room, communication tools and screen-sharing connection; Netflix remains a separate service.
Netflix through screen sharing
- The host’s Netflix browser or application supplies the picture and sound.
- The host controls play, pause, seeking, subtitles and volume.
- Participants may be able to watch the shared feed without signing in to Netflix themselves, but that technical possibility does not change Netflix’s account or usage rules.
- Capture quality, audio routing and content-protection behavior can vary by browser, operating system and device.
Kast TV is a different workflow
Kast TV streams selected content from Kast’s catalog or partners from the cloud. Kast says it is not a virtual browser and does not transmit the host’s computer: Kast TV FAQ. Its catalog can include free material such as YouTube and KastMix, but it should not be assumed to include Netflix or every other subscription service. Catalogs and partners may change by date and geography.
| Kast TV | Netflix through Kast |
|---|---|
| Video comes from Kast’s cloud catalog. | Video comes from the host’s Netflix session. |
| Built for synchronized party playback. | Playback is controlled in the host’s Netflix window. |
| Does not require sharing the host’s desktop. | Requires screen, application or window sharing. |
| Catalog depends on Kast’s available content and partners. | Catalog depends on the host’s Netflix access and region. |
| May reduce the host computer’s capture workload. | The host’s connection and capture quality matter. |
How to host a Netflix watch party on Kast
Menu labels can change between the web and desktop apps, but this is the durable setup:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Create or sign in to a Kast account.
- Open Kast in Chrome or Edge, or launch the Windows or Mac application.
- Create a private party or join an existing one.
- Use the party invitation controls to send the room link to friends.
- Open Netflix in a separate browser window or application and start the movie or episode.
- In Kast, choose the control for sharing a screen, desktop, browser window or application window.
- Select the Netflix window rather than the entire desktop whenever possible.
- Enable computer or system audio if Kast presents that option.
- Ask one participant to confirm that both picture and sound work before settling in.
- Control playback from the Netflix window. Everyone sees the host’s pauses, seeks, buffering and subtitle changes.
- Use Kast voice, video or text chat for conversation.
Prepare the room before sharing
- Close unrelated tabs and applications.
- Turn off desktop notifications so messages and private information do not appear in the video.
- Use headphones to limit echo.
- Prefer a wired or strong Wi-Fi connection for the host.
- Set subtitles, audio language and playback quality before the party begins.
- Share one application window instead of the whole desktop unless the group needs to see multiple apps.
Who controls playback?
With Netflix screen sharing, the host has the only real Netflix player. Participants should not expect independent play or pause controls or perfect service-level synchronization. A host pause, seek, subtitle change or buffering event affects the shared feed for everyone.
For Kast TV, Kast says the person who starts the stream controls functions such as stop and resume. Users with the necessary permissions may be able to replace content, while speaking or sharing video can require party permissions: Kast TV FAQ.

Is Kast free?
Kast has a free account option and free-to-use party functionality. Free users can participate in parties and access free Kast TV content, although exact limits and feature availability can change in the live product interface.
| Feature | Free access | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Join parties | Yes, subject to current limits | Yes |
| Screen sharing | Available; current party limits apply | Enhanced options are advertised |
| Kast TV | Free content available | Additional content and controls may apply |

| Advertising | Not necessarily ad-free | Ad-free use advertised |
| Reactions and invite links | Basic options may apply | Animated or premium reactions and cleaner invite links advertised |
| Price | $0 account option | $6.49 monthly, or $4.99 per month when billed annually |
Those prices and benefits are listed on Kast’s current pricing page: Kast Premium pricing. Premium is not automatically required for every participant. Kast’s FAQ says a user can watch Kast TV content with a friend who is not a Premium member: Kast TV FAQ.

Free Kast is a sensible starting point for an occasional private movie night, especially when the group mainly needs a room, chat and basic screen sharing. Premium is more relevant if the group values higher-quality sharing, ad-free use, picture-in-picture, enhanced reactions, cleaner invitation links or advanced Kast TV controls.

What each participant needs
- A supported Kast web browser or current app. Kast lists Chrome and Edge on desktop, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android: Kast downloads and supported platforms.
- A reliable internet connection, with the host needing the most upload capacity for Netflix screen sharing.
- Microphone, camera, screen and system-audio permissions as needed.
- Netflix access permitted under Netflix’s current plan and account rules when viewing Netflix content.
A participant can often join from a phone while the host uses a computer, but mobile feature parity should not be assumed. Check current permissions and controls before promising Netflix screen sharing from a handset.
Screen sharing versus a synchronized-watch-party service
Why choose Kast screen sharing
- It works for many kinds of desktop content, not only supported streaming catalogs.
- One room combines voice, video, text, reactions and sharing.
- Friends do not all need the same browser extension.
- The same room can support games, presentations, websites and videos.
What you give up
- The host’s connection and computer become the bottleneck.
- Playback is centrally controlled rather than independently synchronized.
- Audio capture may require extra permissions or settings.
- Protected video can appear black or fail to capture on some systems.
- Sharing an entire desktop can expose notifications, passwords or private conversations.
When native synchronization is the better fit
Dedicated tools such as Teleparty or Scener may suit a group whose only goal is synchronized playback in a supported service. Rave is aimed more at mobile-oriented group watching, while Discord is a general-purpose voice, text and screen-sharing platform. Their current prices, supported services and feature limits should be checked directly because they change.

Participants hear no Netflix audio
Stop sharing and start again, explicitly selecting computer or system audio if offered. Check Kast’s audio settings and the operating system’s microphone and screen-recording permissions. Confirm whether the problem affects everyone or only one participant. Historical Kast instructions mention selecting an internal microphone or computer-audio option, but current labels may differ: historical Kast setup guidance.

The video is black or playback is blocked
Browser, operating-system or streaming-service content protection can interfere with capture. Try the Kast desktop app, Chrome or Edge, and test sharing an application window instead of a browser tab (or the reverse). Update Kast and the browser. Do not attempt to bypass DRM or other security controls. If Netflix remains blocked, use a supported synchronized-playback option in which each viewer streams directly from their own account.
There is echo or feedback
- Mute everyone except the current speaker.
- Use headphones.
- Close duplicate Kast rooms on other devices or tabs.
- Lower speaker volume and test participants one at a time.
The picture buffers or looks poor
- Use a wired connection for the host where possible.
- Close bandwidth-heavy applications.
- Share only the Netflix window.
- Lower quality if Kast provides that control.
- Consider Kast TV when the desired title is available, because Kast says that content is delivered from the cloud rather than the host’s computer.
A friend cannot join
Check whether the room is private, whether the invitation is current, whether the participant is using a supported browser or app, and whether a school, workplace or mobile network blocks Kast. Also check current party sharing or viewing limits rather than relying on old “100+” descriptions.
Netflix accounts, privacy and public viewing
Kast does not bypass Netflix’s account rules. Netflix says accounts are intended for use within the household, with extra-member options varying by country, plan and billing arrangement; extra members are not available on ad-supported plans in the circumstances described by Netflix: Netflix account sharing rules. Netflix also limits simultaneous streams by plan: Netflix simultaneous-stream limits.
Use Netflix access that each viewer is entitled to use under Netflix’s current terms. Do not share passwords in Kast chat. A private watch party is also different from a public, paid, classroom, workplace or commercial screening. Netflix states that public or commercial use without authorization violates its terms: Netflix public-use guidance. Obtain appropriate authorization for any event beyond personal viewing.
Who should choose Kast?
Kast is a strong fit when
- The group wants a social hangout with voice, video, chat and reactions.
- The host is comfortable controlling Netflix playback.
- Members may also share games, presentations, websites or other desktop content.
- Some participants need to join from mobile.
- The group wants to try Kast TV’s cloud-delivered catalog.
Choose something else when
- Everyone expects independent Netflix controls.
- The group wants a one-click Netflix extension rather than a screen-share room.
- The host cannot provide reliable upload bandwidth.
- A particular streaming service must be guaranteed to work.
- The event requires precise synchronization at large scale.
- Participants do not want to grant screen, microphone, camera or system-audio permissions.
The Bottom Line
Kast is best understood as a free-to-start virtual living room, not a Netflix upgrade. It can host a Netflix movie night through desktop screen sharing, while Kast TV offers a separate cloud-streamed catalog. Start with the free tier for occasional private parties; consider Premium only for its advertised quality, ad-free and social features. If synchronized Netflix playback—not a broader social room—is your sole requirement, a dedicated watch-party service may be a better fit.
