Karnali Blues is a novel by Nepali writer Buddhisagar about a son whose understanding of his father changes as he grows up. Written originally in Nepali and translated into English by Michael Hutt, it moves between a bedside visit to an ailing father and memories of childhood in western Nepal.

What is Karnali Blues about?

The story follows Brisha Bahadur and his changing relationship with his father. As a boy, he longs for his father’s approval and remembers moments of kindness and forgiveness. Later, as his father’s health and fortunes decline, the son worries about preserving his dignity. The English-language publisher describes this father-son bond as the novel’s emotional center. Penguin Random House India’s book page presents the story through the son’s desire for approval, memories of childhood, and fear for his father’s dignity.

The novel’s frame is a visit to the sick father. The bedside present opens onto recollections of family life and growing up. Sources describe the internal divisions differently: Heritage Books calls the book eleven parts named as days, while an academic account describes ten chapters. Without specifying an edition, it is safest to describe the framing device rather than treat either count as universal.

Where is the story set?

The narrative is rooted in western Nepal. Heritage Books identifies Matēra in the far-western Tarai, Katāse bazaar, and Kalikot in the western hills. An academic introduction describes the family as Pahari and notes that characters speak Tharu and the Jumli dialect of Nepali. These details give the family story a particular regional and linguistic setting rather than an interchangeable rural backdrop. Heritage Books’ listing describes the Nepali edition and its setting; the European Bulletin of Himalayan Research provides the academic account.

Is Karnali Blues originally Nepali or English?

It was originally written in Nepali. Michael Hutt translated it into English. Readers choosing between the two should treat them as different language editions of the same novel, but the available sources do not establish whether every detail is identical or whether specific material differs between them. Thuprai’s listings identify the English translation and Nepali editions.

How to identify an edition

Check language, format, translator, and ISBN before ordering: retailer listings can differ in how they map ISBNs to formats. The known listings include the following:

Edition or listing Details
English paperback Penguin India; translated by Michael Hutt; ISBN 9780143454397 on Penguin Random House India’s page. Thuprai lists a 2021 first edition.
English hardback Penguin Random House India lists ISBN 9780670096602 for the hardback.
Nepali paperback FinePrint; ISBN 9789937746816. Heritage Books lists a soft-cover edition in Nepali with 438 pages; Thuprai lists a FinePrint 2025 edition with this ISBN.
Earlier Nepali paperback Thuprai lists a FinePrint 2010 edition, ISBN 9789937827935.

Pagination is also edition-specific: Penguin Random House India lists 422 pages for its English edition, Heritage Books lists 438 pages for its Nepali listing, and the academic introduction describes the 2010 first edition as 376 pages. The available listings do not explain those differences, so page counts should not be used to infer that the story itself changed. Penguin’s English-edition page records a February 2022 publication entry, while other listings identify editions in 2021; these are distinct listing or edition records, not one universal release date.

What to know about the book’s reception

Penguin describes Karnali Blues as “the most widely read Nepali novel to have appeared in the last twenty years.” That is the publisher’s promotional claim; the page does not give a sales figure or method that would independently verify it. An academic introduction calls the novel “sophisticated in structure and ethnographically and linguistically rich in content,” but this is the publication’s description in the source, not a quotation attributed there to a named critic.

A review by Prayash Gupta appeared in HIMALAYA, volume 45, number 1, on 11 September 2026. The journal record identifies the reviewer and lists topics including Nepali literature, rural Nepal, migration and displacement, and socioeconomic struggles; it does not provide the review’s argument, so no critical verdict should be inferred from the metadata.
