Kanye West’s “Fade” video centers on Teyana Taylor dancing alone in a gym, then shifts into a surreal closing image in which Taylor appears as a lioness beside Iman Shumpert and an infant. The video premiered at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards; Kanye West is credited with its creative vision and Eli Linnetz with directing it.
What happens in the “Fade” video?
The video begins with Taylor performing an intense dance routine in a gym. Its final sequence changes the mood from a stark performance setting to a surreal domestic tableau: Taylor is transformed into a lioness-like figure alongside her husband, Iman Shumpert, and an infant. The abrupt shift is part of the video’s striking contrast between athletic movement and family imagery.
What does the lioness imagery mean?
Choreographer and artistic director Jae Blaze offered one interpretation in a Pitchfork interview published August 29, 2016: “The lioness always protects her baby. I think it really is about her coming into her fierceness.” That is Blaze’s reading of the imagery, not a confirmed statement of the director’s or West’s intended meaning.
Who made the video?
The FADER’s contemporaneous credits name Kanye West for creative vision and Eli Linnetz as director. Other credited contributors include Iconoclast as producer, Kathleen Heffernan as executive producer, Guillermo Navarro as director of photography, Tino Shaedler for production design, and Renelou Pandora for styling. Choreography is credited to Guapo, Jae Blaze, and Derek “Bentley” Watkins; Adam Robinson edited the video, and Sofie Borup handled color.
