A24 released the film’s first official trailer on April 8, 2024, framing the sequel as a lurid Hollywood horror story with Maxine’s past in danger of coming to light.
What the first MaXXXine trailer shows
The trailer shifts the series’ focus to 1980s Hollywood. Maxine is no longer simply trying to survive: she is chasing a screen career, and the threat of a killer stalking starlets puts that ambition—and her history—at risk. The official synopsis says the trail of blood threatens to expose Maxine’s past.
Contemporary coverage connected the setting and killer backdrop to the era’s fear surrounding the Night Stalker. That is historical context for the trailer’s atmosphere, not an official claim that the film’s fictional killer is the real-world murderer. A24’s synopsis describes a mysterious killer stalking Hollywood starlets without identifying the figure as the Night Stalker.
Cast and filmmakers
Ti West wrote and directed the film, with Mia Goth starring as Maxine Minx. A24’s trailer listing also names Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.

Where MaXXXine fits in the series
MaXXXine follows X and Pearl in Ti West’s series. Its distinct narrative setting is 1980s Hollywood, with Maxine pursuing an acting breakthrough after her adult-film work. The available official synopsis establishes that premise; it does not offer a scene-by-scene account of how the new film compares with its predecessors.
Release and streaming dates
A24’s first official trailer was published April 8, 2024, and its description announced a July 5 theatrical release. Warner Bros. Discovery later announced that the film would debut on HBO and stream exclusively on Max in the United States on October 18, 2024. That was a dated U.S. announcement, not confirmation of current availability; streaming catalogs can change and differ by territory, so check the service listing for your location.
