Kabosu, the Shiba Inu behind the defining image of the Doge meme, died peacefully on May 24, 2024, at 18. Her owner, Atsuko Sato, said Kabosu passed in her sleep as she stroked her.
Kabosu, the Japanese female Shiba Inu whose 2010 photograph became the defining image of the Doge meme and later a cultural emblem for Dogecoin, died on May 24, 2024. She was 18.
Her owner, Atsuko Sato, announced the death on her blog, writing that Kabosu entered a deep sleep at 7:50 a.m. and died quietly while Sato stroked her. The announcement described the circumstances of her death, but did not give a medical cause.
More than the face of a meme
Kabosu was a real dog with a life that long predated internet fame. Sato’s account says Kabosu had been taken to an animal welfare center after a breeder closed, was rescued with help from a volunteer group, and joined Sato’s family in November 2008. On Sato’s photo-and-daily-life blog, Kabosu lived alongside the family’s rescued cats.

How a 2010 photograph became Doge
In the photograph most associated with Doge, Kabosu sits on a sofa with her paws crossed, giving the camera an alert, slightly sidelong look. The image spread widely several years later as part of the Doge meme format.

By 2013, Doge had become a major internet phenomenon: Shiba Inu images paired with colorful, deliberately ungrammatical captions—often set in Comic Sans—that read like exaggerated inner thoughts. Kabosu’s photograph became the enduring visual shorthand for the format.
The dates are easy to blur together, but they are distinct: Sato posted Kabosu’s photographs in 2010; Doge became a major meme in 2013.

The Dogecoin connection, precisely stated
Doge inspired Dogecoin, which launched in December 2013. According to the Dogecoin Foundation, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created the cryptocurrency. Kabosu did not create Dogecoin, and neither did Sato.
The connection is cultural rather than operational: Kabosu’s photograph became the defining Doge image; Doge then inspired Dogecoin. Keeping those steps separate honors the dog and avoids reducing her life to a speculative asset or treating the meme as something she and her owner commercially invented.

A memorial in Sakura
Kabosu’s legacy was recognized in her home country before her death. On November 2, 2023, a bronze memorial supported by the Doge and Dogecoin community was unveiled at Furusato Square in Sakura, Chiba, Japan. The Dogecoin Foundation said community fundraising for the memorial approached US$100,000; that figure should be understood as the foundation’s account of the campaign.
After Kabosu died, Sato announced a farewell gathering in Narita on May 26, 2024, and considered a later celebratory gathering at Sakura Furusato Square. The public response reflected an unusual modern cultural history: a rescued dog, photographed in the ordinary rhythms of home life, had become recognizable to millions of people who had never known her name.

Remembering Kabosu beyond the screen
For readers who want a more personal record of Kabosu’s life, KADOKAWA released a retrospective Japanese photo book on March 14, 2025: 『かぼすちゃんと、ずうっとおさんぽ。〜「はじめまして」から「また会おうね」まで〜』. The 96-page, full-color book includes photographs, messages from Sato, and episodes from Kabosu’s final days. Its official release information identified Amazon Japan among the sales channels; availability, price, and delivery territory should be checked before ordering. A useful Amazon Japan search phrase is かぼすちゃんと、ずうっとおさんぽ 写真集.
Kabosu’s story is ultimately smaller and warmer than the sprawling internet culture built around her image: a rescued Shiba Inu, loved and photographed by her owner, whose expression became a shared visual language online.
