The subpoena sought communications involving Swift’s and Blake Lively’s legal teams, but the reason Baldoni’s lawyer gave for seeking them was disputed by Lively’s side. Swift was not a party to the lawsuit; her spokesperson described her film involvement as licensing a song.
Did Baldoni drop the Taylor Swift subpoena?
Yes. TheWrap reported the withdrawal on May 22, 2025, and ABC’s Good Morning America reported it the following day. Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, said the information sought was being provided voluntarily, so the subpoenas were no longer needed, according to Variety’s account.
The subpoena targeted Swift and her law firm. The available reporting does not establish that a court ruled on the subpoena’s underlying allegations; accounts of why the information was sought came from the parties and their representatives.
What did the subpoena ask for, and why?
Variety reported that the subpoenas sought communications involving the legal teams for Swift and Lively. Freedman said he was seeking evidence related to an alleged threat to release text messages unless Swift publicly supported Lively. That was his account, not an established fact or court finding.

Lively’s lawyers called the allegations false and argued they were irrelevant to the claims and defenses in the case. TheWrap quoted a Lively spokesperson as welcoming the decision to end what the spokesperson called a “harassing” probe. Those characterizations, like Freedman’s explanation, should be understood as statements by the respective sides.
What was Taylor Swift’s role in the film?
Swift’s spokesperson said her involvement in It Ends With Us was licensing a song. ABC quoted the spokesperson as saying: “Given that her involvement was licensing a song for the film, which 19 other artists also did, this document subpoena is designed to use Taylor Swift’s name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.” This is the spokesperson’s description of Swift’s involvement and view of the subpoena, not a court conclusion.

What did the judge say about the public dispute?
In a May 15, 2025 ruling discussed by TheWrap, Judge Lewis J. Liman said a letter at issue was “irrelevant to any issue before this Court” and did not request action from the court. He also wrote that its “sole purpose” was to “promote public scandal” through inflammatory accusations against Lively and her counsel. The judge’s quoted remarks concerned that letter; they should not be treated as a ruling that the subpoena’s disputed allegations were true.

Coverage in 2025 referred to a March 2026 trial date, but that date was superseded. The Associated Press reported that Lively and Baldoni settled the bulk of their dispute in May 2026 before trial. A later AP report said Judge Liman awarded Lively some legal fees and costs tied to defending against Baldoni’s countersuit, while rejecting punitive damages and other requested relief. These later developments do not establish that the 2025 subpoena caused the settlement or the fee ruling.
