It is not presented as a literal disaster unfolding. The official video was co-directed by Mars and Daniel Ramos.
What happens in the “Die With a Smile” video?
The official video places the duet in a vintage-looking performance setting. Universal Music Japan describes 1960s–70s-inspired clothing and stage dressing, with Gaga and Mars performing on guitar and piano. That setup gives the song a nostalgic stage-show frame rather than depicting an apocalyptic event.
The visual premise fits the song’s imagined catastrophe: if the world were ending, the people singing would choose to be together. In a December 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gaga said the lyric idea drew her to the song: “It was the lyrics — this idea of a song that was about what we would do if the world was ending.” Read the interview.
Who directed the music video?
Bruno Mars and Daniel Ramos co-directed the official video, according to its official YouTube description. The available official synopsis describes the look and performance, but does not establish a more detailed plot or production backstory.

Why does the video look like an old television performance?
The retro styling is an intentional visual frame. Universal Music Japan characterizes the clothing and stage as inspired by the 1960s and ’70s, and describes the artists accompanying themselves on guitar and piano. That evidence supports calling it a period-inspired performance; it does not establish that the video is meant to be a recovered broadcast or documentary footage.
When was “Die With a Smile” released, and where does it appear?
The song and its official video arrived in August 2024. Universal Music Canada called it Gaga and Mars’s first collaboration in its August 16, 2024 announcement. Official audio metadata identifies “Die With a Smile” as part of Gaga’s album MAYHEM, released March 7, 2025; see the official audio listing.

How successful was it at release?
Universal Music Canada reported 1.06 billion global streams across digital service providers since release in an announcement dated October 30, 2024. That is a label-reported snapshot from that date, not a current streaming total. The same announcement covered a separate live video filmed at Dolby Live at Park MGM; that live performance is distinct from the original staged retro video. Universal Music Canada’s announcement.
