June Lockhart, the actor remembered as Ruth Martin on Lassie and Maureen Robinson on Lost in Space, died at her home in Santa Monica, California, on October 23, 2025. She was 100. Her long career began in a theatrical family and continued across film, television and the stage for decades.
June Lockhart’s life in pictures: a career timeline
A picture-led account of Lockhart’s life can follow the changes in her work, from childhood appearances to the two television roles that made her familiar to generations of viewers. The dates and milestones below provide context for selecting and captioning images.
- Childhood in a theatrical family: Born in New York City on June 25, 1925, Lockhart was the daughter of actors Gene and Kathleen Lockhart. She appeared onstage as a child at the Metropolitan Opera and in the 1938 film A Christmas Carol. An image from this period should be captioned only after its date and identity are verified.
- Early adult career and Broadway recognition: Lockhart continued acting in film and onstage. She won a Tony Award at 22 for her Broadway performance, a major early distinction in a career that would cross stage and screen.
- Ruth Martin on Lassie (1958–1964): Lockhart played Ruth Martin, who helped raise orphaned Timmy in the rural family drama. A photograph from the series should identify her as Ruth Martin and distinguish her from other cast members.
- Maureen Robinson on Lost in Space (1965–1968): She played the mother of the Robinson family in the science-fiction adventure. The Associated Press obituary quoted Lockhart describing work on the show this way: “It was like going to work at Disneyland every day.”
- Later television and stage work: Beginning in 1968, she played Dr. Janet Craig on Petticoat Junction. Later credits included General Hospital, Knots Landing and The Colbys, as well as tours in stage plays. A later-career portrait can help show how her work continued beyond her best-known series.

Why Ruth Martin and Maureen Robinson remain her signature roles
| Series | Lockhart’s character | Family connection | Genre and dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lassie | Ruth Martin | Timmy’s adoptive mother | Rural family drama; 1958–1964 |
| Lost in Space | Maureen Robinson | Mother of the Robinson family | Science-fiction adventure; 1965–1968 |
The parts made her familiar in very different settings: one rooted in everyday family life, the other in a spacefaring adventure. The AP obituary also quoted Lockhart reflecting on being strongly associated with a role: “How wonderful that in a career there is one role for which you are known. Many actors work all their lives and never have one part that is really theirs.” The quotation is attributed to Lockhart by the AP obituary.
A career beyond the two famous series
Lockhart’s television career did not end with Lost in Space. Her turn as Dr. Janet Craig on Petticoat Junction began in 1968, and her later screen credits included daytime drama and primetime series. She also returned to the stage, including touring productions.

Her public image was closely tied to the warm, capable mothers she played, but that image should not be mistaken for a complete account of her private personality. The AP obituary reproduced her 1994 reflection: “I can control my reputation, but not my image, because my image is how you see me.” It also reported her remark that she was unlike the maternal characters she portrayed.

How to build a reliable picture timeline
- Use photographs from distinct periods—childhood or early film work, early adulthood, Lassie, Lost in Space and later career—rather than presenting several similar portraits.
- Verify the people pictured and the image date with a photo library or rights holder; do not infer a date from the production or from appearance alone.
- Confirm licensing, permitted use and the exact credit line before publication. A photograph being available online does not establish permission to reuse it.
- Caption each image with the narrowest supported identification, such as “June Lockhart as Ruth Martin on Lassie,” only when the specific photograph has been verified.
